💜 Young Onset Dementia Day – 24 October 💜
Dementia can affect people at any age, and today we want to raise awareness of young onset dementia and the impact it can have on individuals and their families.
At the Say It With A Smile Memory Steps Course at Eggleton House on Friday, Tring Town Mayor, Cllr Carol Nutkins, met Trevor, who has young onset dementia, and his wife, Di, who is his unpaid carer.
Di kindly shared their story:
“You don't have to be old to be diagnosed with dementia. Trevor was still working when he was diagnosed aged 62 but retired at 65 as his employer was not very supportive. It was scary and we felt so alone at first.
I don't drive but Trevor has annual driving assessments and can still drive, so we are able to get out to groups, which helps. We support and advocate for various local dementia charities. Our life now is very different to the one we thought we'd have. It can be a real struggle at times, but we are making the most of it while we can.”
Di particularly wanted to highlight the wonderful support they have received from Say it with a Smile 💜. Their support makes a real difference to people living with dementia and those who care for them.
Trevor and Di's story is a reminder that dementia doesn't just affect older people, and that understanding, support and connection are so important.
