Incident update – wildfire in Ferndale, Wednesday 22 April

🔥At 23:39 on Wednesday 22 April, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS) was called to reports of a category two wildfire covering approximately 3km².

Twelve fire appliances attended the incident. Crews faced challenging conditions due to steep terrain and strong winds, which made firefighting efforts particularly difficult.

As a precaution, 14 nearby properties were evacuated while firefighters worked to contain the blaze, which threatened the fence line. Residents have since been able to safely return to their homes.

The fire was fully extinguished at 5:00am this morning.

Residents in the surrounding area are advised to keep doors and windows closed for the time being due to lingering smoke.

⚠️Wildfires can spread quickly, particularly during dry or windy conditions. Please help reduce the risk by never lighting fires or barbecues in the countryside, avoiding disposable barbecues, disposing of ci******es and litter responsibly, and reporting any signs of fire immediately by calling 999.

Thank you to our crews for their hard work and to local residents for their patience and cooperation.

🔥 Proud night at the Beacon Awards 🔥

We at Treorchy are incredibly proud of our firefighters and officers following their attendance at South Wales Fire and Rescue Service’s very first Beacon Awards 👏

It was a fantastic evening celebrating the dedication, professionalism and commitment shown across the service every single day.

A huge congratulations to all nominees and winners – each and every one of you should be extremely proud of your achievements.

A special mention goes to our own crew members on their success – a brilliant accomplishment and thoroughly deserved! 🔥

Diolch to everyone who continues to represent our station and community with such pride.

🚒 Training Night… With a Twist! 🚒

People often ask what we actually do on training nights at Treorchy Fire Station. The answer is simple — we train for as many different scenarios as possible, so when the pager goes off we’re ready for whatever comes our way.

This week’s training venue though was slightly different to the usual drill yard… we were invited to The Play Yard Treorchy.

Now before anyone asks… no, we weren’t there for the slides and ball pits (although a few of the crew were very tempted). Instead we used the centre’s crawlways and tunnels to carry out Breathing Apparatus search and rescue training. Wearing full kit and breathing apparatus, crews had to navigate the maze of tight spaces in zero visibility to locate and rescue casualty dummies.

It turns out crawling through kids’ play tunnels in full fire kit is a lot harder than it looks… and some of our firefighters definitely aren’t quite the same size they were when they last visited a soft play centre! 😅

A huge thank you to Nathan and his team at The Play Yard for letting us take over the place for the evening. It’s brilliant to have local businesses supporting our training and helping us keep our skills sharp.

We’re so grateful to you.

To our Treorchy community,
Supportive and kind,
We’re proud to serve you,

A busy start to the New Year for us at Treorchy Fire Station 🚒

Within the last week we’ve attended a number of RTCs, including a vehicle colliding with scaffolding, leaving it unsafe. A huge thank you to Gareth, from Rhondda Scaffolding, who helped re-secure it to the building – much appreciated 👏

We’ve also been dealing with some challenging weather conditions, including a call out to Pen y Cymoedd Wind Farm on Saturday evening… in the snow ❄️

Finally, this evening we attended an incident on the Bwlch Mountain, in very poor weather and driving conditions, where a car had left the road, stopping at the edge of a steep drop. Thankfully, no one was injured.

This is a timely reminder to everyone to take extra care on our mountain roads, especially during poor weather conditions. Stay safe out there.

A brilliant effort from our crew at Treorchy Fire Station this week! 🎄🚒

Not only did we proudly take part in the Treorchy Christmas Parade, but our team also helped put up 75 Christmas trees throughout the town — bringing some real festive cheer to the high street.

Thank you to everyone who came out to support us and helped make Treorchy shine a little brighter this Christmas! ⭐🎅
