Totally agree with this and and thank Jude for the hard work in raising this issue

Jude Rae from Dunfermline is a Fife childminder, who is spearheading the ELC campaign in her area to ensure childminders are considered as partner providers to provide funded ELC.

“The increase in funded hours for all three to four year olds and eligible twos is an excellent scheme, but only if it is carried out with the child as the centre of decision making. Not all children can cope with a full day at nursery.

“When the increase in funded hours kicks in, as well as families’ choice being put at risk, our own roles as childminders may be put at risk too if we are not embraced by more local authorities as part of the ELC providers.”

We know a childminding service is one of the ideal settings for children to experience their funded hours, offering a blended approach to childcare.

However, some local authorities seem to be telling us that childminders are not interested in partnering with them to provide funded ELC - not true we say!
We need your support to (and parents) to challenge their local authority and ask for childminding service to be included as funded ELC partner providers.
Please help us and raise your - and share this message far and wide....


It's important that we remind everyone about these five key points and that childminders provide high quality and professional ELC services:

1. 44% of childminders are rated as 'very good' or 'excellent' for all quality themes, compared to 41.5% in daycare of children services, including nurseries.

2. Funded Early Learning and Childcare (ELC) with a childminders will give children the chance to learn and play in small groups with friends.

3. Research shows that good quality early ELC helps children's learning, development and wellbeing.

4 With a childminder, families can flexibly arrange childcare to fit around your free part-time place.

5. The Scottish Government is committed to "childminders having a key role in delivering the expanded funded entitlement".
