Staring contest in 3... 2... 1...🦉

Although little owls are found across the UK, they are not a native species. Introduced in the 19th century from mainland Europe, little owls have settled well into our ecosystem with no negative impact!

Unfortunately, their numbers are on the decline. The reason is unknown, but there is the belief it may be due to new intensive farming methods, habitat loss and pesticides causing lower populations of their prey.

Well how can we support little owls? By avoiding pesticide use and encouraging habitat diversity. Here at our park we have dedicated wildlife areas, left completely undeveloped to support our local wildlife! 💚

Happy National Pine Marten Day! 💚

We absolutely adore these elusive mustelids. From their stunning chestnut brown fur and a creamy throat bib to their semi-retractable claws, pine martens are incredible to see!

As one of Britain’s rarest carnivores due to habitat loss and extensive hunting, the once successful mustelid became nearly extinct by the 20th century in England. All has not been lost though, as successful breeding programmes and increased protection has led to an increase in its range 🎉

Here at the New Forest Wildlife Park we are very proud to be supporting this agile species through our breeding successes over several years with our male Hamish and female Rolo. Together they have successfully produced 4 litters of 3 kits, all of which have either moved on to other wildlife parks or zoos to join the breeding programmes themselves, or have been released into the wild through release programmes in Scotland and Wales!

With a 2.4m wingspan, the white-tailed sea eagles are magnificent. They went extinct in the UK in the 20th century, but are making a historic conservation comeback. 💚

They remain a species requiring ongoing conservation attention but, following successful reintroduction programmes, White-tailed Sea Eagles can now be spotted in Scotland's Isle of Mull, Isle of Skye, Loch Sunart and on the Isle of Wight.
