Police are receiving daily reports of young people entering abandoned buildings throughout Torbay, putting themselves and others at risk. At some point, someone could be seriously hurt or worse.

Breaking into abandoned buildings is highly dangerous. Many are unstable with unsafe floors broken glass and exposed electrical wiring as well as entrapment hazards. There is the risk of exposure to asbestos as well as pigeon and other faeces. The health risks from exposure will not be seen now but many years in the future.

We ask parents to think about what their children are doing in their free time and, if they believe they are involved in this activity, to discuss the dangers with them. Please remember, although trespass is deemed a civil matter, burglary and other offences are criminal and will be dealt with accordingly.

If you think people are accessing an abandoned building near you, please contact Council (ASB, environment and nuisance - Torbay Council) and the owner of the property. Any urgent issues, please contact the Police via the normal channels.

Good afternoon Torquay 👋

The Neighbourhood Team in Torquay were made aware of a video circulating on social media this morning from Paignton showing 2 individuals riding a moped with face coverings. Due to some wider work being conducted by the team in Torquay the neighbourhood team attended an address in Paignton and located the moped seen in the video and seized it. Also present was another moped that was suspected to be stolen, this was also seized. A home owner (not believed to be riding the moped) was spoken in relation to this - their response being uncooperative. This will be taken further with use of civil orders/ other relevant legislation.

We are aware of the public impact and feeling in relation to moped thefts and the team in Torquay are prioritising investigations into these under a new operation, whilst this operation is with the team here we will cover all areas of Torbay including Paignton where the majority of thefts have been reported.

We would also like to take the opportunity to ask members of the public to report incidents directly to us, even at low speeds the chance of injury from falling from a moped, especially without protective clothing, is high.

We will have further updates in due course, please also see the linked guidance in relation to protecting your motorcycle, moped or scooter from theft - https://orlo.uk/3vYt5

👮🏼 Dawlish Warren Beach – Police Engagement Update

During the evening of Friday 22 May, following information and intelligence received, officers from our Neighbourhood Teams across South Devon attended Dawlish Warren Beach in response to reports of a large number of young people gathering in the area, some of which had travelled to Dawlish from all over the South Devon area.

Our approach was focused on engagement and education. We recognise that young people want to socialise and enjoy themselves; however, it is important this is done in a safe and responsible manner.

Officers engaged positively with those present, resulting in constructive interactions. While the majority of people were cooperative and respectful, a large number of alcohol seizures were made.

Our primary concern was the safety of the public, particularly given the number of young people present, with many being under the influence of alcohol, on a beach with the tide coming in. Our clear aim was to safeguard those present and ensure everyone was able to leave the area safely.

We would like to thank those who engaged with officers and understood the reasons for our presence and actions.

It is disappointing that officers were also required to assist in clearing litter from the beach afterwards, and we would urge everyone to take responsibility for the environment.

We are aware of further planned gatherings across South Devon. We will continue to take a proactive approach, working to engage and educate. We also ask parents and guardians to consider the risks associated with large, unsupervised public gatherings when making decisions about their children attending such events.

LATEST | Information has been received that planned gatherings involving young people have been arranged in locations across South Devon today, 22 May.

While the majority are good natured and will no doubt want to make the best of the good bank holiday weather, there have been recent incidents involving large groups of young people which have led to antisocial behaviour and community disruption.

In response to those events and today’s information, officers will be carrying out increased high-visibility patrols in known areas and will utilise such powers as Section 35 dispersal orders if considered appropriate.

These orders give officers enhanced powers to prevent antisocial behaviour, reduce disruption and keep the public safe.

What this means:
• Officers can direct individuals or groups to leave the area immediately.
• Those directed must not return within the specified time period.
• Failure to comply is a criminal offence and may result in arrest.
• Anyone under the age of 16 may be taken home or to a place of safety.

Robust action will be taken where necessary.

We thank the community for their continued support and encourage anyone with concerns to contact us via the Force website: https://orlo.uk/dvKm7 or by telephone on 101, quoting log 418 of 22 May.

🚔 Operation Sceptre | Tackling Knife Crime in Torbay 🚔

Throughout the week, officers from the Neighbourhood Support Team have been out across Torbay as part of Op Sceptre, the national campaign focused on tackling knife crime and serious violence.

Officers attended South Devon College to deliver an input to students around the dangers and consequences of carrying knives, encouraging positive conversations around personal safety and making informed choices. We also worked alongside Police Cadets to provide further engagement with young people in the community.

As part of proactive activity, officers conducted a weapons sweep in the Factory Row area of Torquay, where a weapon was recovered and safely removed from the streets.

Hot spot patrols were also carried out in key areas across Torquay. During these patrols, officers arrested a high-risk domestic violence perpetrator who was also found to be in possession of a significant quantity of Class A drugs.

We remain committed to working with our communities to reduce violence, remove weapons from our streets and keep people safe.
