A Liberal Democrat councillor who trades in Torquay town centre is set to demand an explanation as to why the local authority has sat on ยฃ100,000 this summer that could have been used to support businesses in our town centres across the Bay.

Councillor Ras Virdee, who runs a retail business in Torquay town centre said, โ€œWe have seen uncertainty with more stores closing and others questioning their long term future in the town centre. The deployment of a town centre manager with a budget to start to tackle some of the ingrained issues in the town centre would have been a vote of confidence that our high street needs.โ€

Steve Darling, leader of the Liberal Democrats on Torbay Council, said โ€œmany local residents that I speak to, their top priority is seeing a step change of improvement in the town centre. It is a pity that the Conservatives have dithered and delayed over improving our town centres.โ€

The question from Councillor Virdee that is set to be put on 20th September full council meeting is as follows:

In a recent Guardian article dated 25 August 2023, I was not surprised, as a Torquay town trader myself, to see concerns being raised by businesses in Torquay town centre. One business owner described this summer as the โ€œworst in 14 yearsโ€, with the town looking โ€œdesertedโ€. Another estimated that โ€œwithout support from the government, within the next 12 months, at least another third of the remaining businesses will closeโ€. In light of this, over six months ago, Torbay Council agreed in the 2023-24 budget for ยฃ100,000 to be allocated to introduce a new role within the Council to act as a force for positive change in our town centres. Can you please explain why no appointment has been made?

We are asking for views on proposals for six mandatory 20mph zones to improve road safety around schools on busy roads in Paignton and Torquay.
The locations are:
Paignton - Sacred Heart School (Cecil Road area), Hayes School (Totnes Road/Hayes Road area)
Torquay - Cockington School (Avenue Road and Mill Lane), Barton Academy (Barton Hill Road area), Torquay Academy (Barton Road and Cricketfield Road areas), St Cuthbert Mayne (Teignmouth Road and Westhill Road areas).
We especially want to hear from resident in the areas and parents and carers of children at the schools.
You've got until Sunday 9 June to have your say.
Full details including maps of all the proposed zones and a survey are available on our website: https://orlo.uk/cByIM

Torbay Liberal Democrats are demanding better for Paignton by establishing a police enquiry office for the town.

In recent weeks, enquiry offices have been set up in Honiton,
Kingsbridge, Looe, Okehampton, Ilfracombe and Devonport all of which have much smaller populations than Paignton.

Paignton has a population of 67,488 and the crime rate in 2022 was 51 crimes per 1,000 people. This compares poorly to Devon's overall crime rate, coming in 12% higher than the Devon rate of 46 per 1,000 residents.

The petition to Devon & Cornwall Police is set to be launched on Saturday 13 April. Liberal Democrats will be on Victoria Street Paignton collecting names and all are welcome to pop along and sign the petition.

The Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Torbay Cllr Steve Darling said โ€œI am incredulous as to why the Police and Crime Commissioner is establishing Police Enquiry Offices in places such as Ilfracombe with a population of 11,042 which may be well deserving but there is no such plans for a service in Paignton. We have significantly higher levels of crime in Paignton and an easier way to engage with the Police at an enquiry office in the town centre is well overdue. I hope people will back our petition.โ€
