Trafford Liberal Democrats campaigning for the liberal heart of Trafford

It may be “just a street sign” to some people.

But when residents have been asking for more than two years, it matters.

Residents raised it. I reported it. Barbara Gerard, our local team and I chased it again and again. There were emails, conversations with officers, repeated follow-ups — and yes, I even named and shamed the council with my little ducks to try to get action.

Because let’s be clear: sending one email is easy. Every resident can do that. A councillor and a local campaigner should go the extra mile — not just turn up for a photo and claim the credit once the work is done.

The Balfour Road sign was finally replaced earlier in May.

It took far too long, but we got there in the end.

That is what hard work looks like. And it’s the Liberal Democrats who get things done.

There are serious questions to answer about the long-term future of the former Minor Injuries Unit at Altrincham Hospital.

Labour closed it. The Tories have no plan.

The Liberal Democrats want to see it reopened as a Diagnostic Centre, so local people can get tests, checks and scans closer to home instead of having to travel to Wythenshawe Hospital.

That would mean better access to healthcare locally and less pressure on Wythenshawe, where A&E waiting times are already under huge strain.

Do you support our plan? If you do, please share this post.

Labour Minister Pat McFadden said:

“Every meeting I have is: who can we tax..”

That says it all.

Life is getting tougher. Bills are higher. Food is more expensive. Families, pensioners and small businesses are being squeezed.

The Conservatives failed. Now Labour are heading the same way — more tax, no real plan.

And where is our local Labour MP, Connor Rand? Missing in action.

The Liberal Democrats have a better plan. See the comments.

The Cresta Court Should Be Returned to the Community.

The Cresta Court has been used to house people seeking asylum since November 2024. At the time, residents were told this was meant to be a 12-month contract between the Home Office, Serco and the hotel owners. Eighteen months later, the hotel is still being used.

The Liberal Democrats have always been clear: we do not want hotels to be used to house people seeking asylum, and we want the Cresta Court returned to its normal use in the community.
We are calling again on the Government to stop using Cresta Court in this way, and on Trafford Council to push for the hotel to be brought back into normal use.

The Liberal Democrats support a fair, firm and workable asylum system. That means reversing Conservative cuts to the Home Office so asylum applications can be processed much more quickly, the backlog can be cleared, and people can get a decision on their claim far sooner.

While their asylum application is being considered, people should be allowed to work, pay taxes and contribute towards their accommodation, instead of being left in hotels at taxpayers’ expense and vulnerable to illegal work.

Conservative ministers, including Robert Jenrick — now a Reform UK MP — failed to secure our borders and allowed people to be exploited by unscrupulous criminal gangs. But despite promising to improve the asylum system, Labour is failing to deliver. Nearly two years after its general election victory, hotels like Cresta Court are still being used.

Cresta Court should not be used as a sticking plaster for the Government’s broken asylum system.

Residents were told this would be temporary. Eighteen months later, it is time for the Labour Government to keep its word, stop using Cresta Court as asylum accommodation, and return it to the community.

Last night, Trafford Conservatives chose political theatre over serious opposition.

Within an hour of the Council meeting starting, they voted against the appointment of Trafford Council’s leadership — even though Labour has a majority on the Council and Tom Ross continues as Leader.

That is not how control of the Council changes. The public decide that at the ballot box.

The vote had no bearing on who runs Trafford Council. It was a stunt.

That is why the Liberal Democrats abstained. We will hold Labour to account where it matters — on services, council tax, local priorities and the decisions affecting residents — not take part in pointless political games.

Waiting a long time for this one — over 2 years!

But residents on Balfour Road have finally had their street sign repaired after many emails from residents, local Cllr Ulrich Stephane Savary, and myself.

Glad it’s finally sorted. As always, if you need any help, get in touch: [email protected]
