Help wanted: Local Heroes & Community Champions.
As we begin a new year, I wanted to share a few reflections from my time as a Liberal Democrat councillor here in Timperley.
Being a councillor is, at its heart, about community and the everyday things that affect people’s lives. It means listening to residents and helping to resolve practical issues — from potholes and street lighting, to parks and green spaces, traffic and road safety, planning decisions, and supporting our schools and education services. It’s about being visible, accessible, and willing to take up concerns that might otherwise be overlooked.
Good local government also depends on strong scrutiny. Trafford is better served when there are independent voices on the council prepared to ask questions, challenge decisions, and hold the administration to account. Where one party dominates, it becomes easier for decisions to go unchallenged and for residents’ concerns to be missed. Liberal Democrat councillors play an important role in making sure that doesn’t happen.
You don’t need to be a career politician to be a councillor. Some of the best colleagues I’ve worked with are people who care deeply about their neighbourhoods, local services, the environment, and opportunities for young people — and who want to make a practical difference. If you’ve ever thought about getting more involved, whether by joining the Liberal Democrats or exploring the idea of standing as a candidate in the local elections this May, I would warmly encourage you to do so.
Local democracy relies on people stepping forward, and the New Year feels like a good moment to reflect on how we can all play a part in shaping Trafford’s future.
If you’ve ever thought about getting more involved, whether by joining the Liberal Democrats or exploring the idea of standing as a candidate in the local elections this May, I would warmly encourage you to do so.
With best wishes for the New Year,
Councillor Jane Brophy - Liberal Democrats
