The Castle & Gardens of Mey

The Castle & Gardens of Mey There's something for everyone at the Castle of Mey. Castle-Gardens-Tearoom-Gift Shop-Animal Centre Seen from a distance, its turreted aspect is very striking.

The Castle of Mey was the property of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother from 1952 until 1996, when Her Majesty generously gifted it with an endowment to the Trust. The castle is situated on the north coast of Caithness, in the parish of Canisbay, about 15 miles east of Thurso and six miles west of John O'Groats. It stands on rising ground about 400 yards from the seashore, overlooking the Pentland

Firth and the Orkney Islands. It is thought that a fortified granary occupied the site originally. Constructed on a z-plan, the castle was built between 1566 and 1572. The jutting towers and corbelled turrets are typical of that period of the 16th century, particularly the chequered character of the corbelling of the smaller turrets. The parapet of the large turret is supported on winged cherub heads as corbels, similar to those on Carberry Tower, Midlothian. There are numerous gun slits throughout the ground floor, several in the angles of the tower and more at first-floor level. The round arched entrance to the courtyard, on the north aspect is unaltered. The walled garden and parkland to the west and the east border and parkland to the east are protected by the Great Wall of Mey - 12 feet high - which gives very necessary protection from the severe gales and salt spray.

🌟 Royal Highland Show Judge Spotlight – Park Section 🌟

The North Country Cheviot Sheep Society is delighted to welcome Mr Danny McCarthy of the Longoe Flock, Caithness, as judge of the Park Section at this year's Royal Highland Show.

Owned by The Queen Elizabeth Castle of Mey Trust, the Longoe Flock has a remarkable history within the breed. Established in 1960 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and Danny's grandfather, who was farm manager at the time, the flock has enjoyed outstanding success, winning the Highland Show Breed Championship on nine occasions and securing the coveted Interbreed Sheep Championship in 1991 with a gimmer.

Speaking ahead of the show, Danny said:

"It is an honour to be invited to judge the North Country Cheviot Park Section at this year's Royal Highland Show. I'm very much looking forward to the occasion and hope there will be a strong turnout of quality sheep. I fully appreciate the months of hard work and dedication that go into preparing sheep to compete at this level."

When it comes to selecting his champions, Danny will be looking for:

✔️ Plenty of breed character
✔️ An alert, eye-catching presence
✔️ A good body with a leg at each corner
✔️ Good skin and hair
✔️ Wool where there should be wool – as expected of a true hill breed

We look forward to welcoming Danny to Ingliston and wish all exhibitors the very best of luck in the Park classes on THURSDAY MORNING AT 9am RING 9.

After busily working behind the scenes, our Garden Team have created a wonderful animal themed trail in our Woodlands for children to both explore and locate 14 animal boards which represents native Highland animals. However one board doesn’t quite fit into the Highland habitat - the question is will you be able to find it and tell us the odd one out? …..
