... and he's done it! Well done to Ed who completed the Tour de CAB. Ed, a Citizens Advice Advisor, started his tour outside the Town Hall in the High Street, where free Citizens Advice South Gloucestershire sessions are offered every Tuesday and Thursday between 10.00am and 12.00pm. He then travelled 35 miles on his mountain bike visiting all the South Gloucestershire drop-in centres raising awareness and a fabulous £700 to help the charity continue to provide these vital services.

What tiny creatures are living in our streams? And what can we do to help protect them? Come along to our Freshwater Lab at Mundy Playing Fields this half-term and find out!

🌱 Find out how we can all help care for our streams and ponds
🎨 Have a go at some watery-themed nature crafts and activities
💧 Find out how you can become a Water Guardian or River Detective
🌳 Hear more about the work of the Town Council’s Climate and Nature Committee
💦 Get an update on plans for a new natural water play facility at the Mundy Playing Fields

Biodiversity Officer Sally Pattison will be there to share some of the wonders of the underwater world and answer your questions.

No booking needed – and it’s completely FREE! Just drop in at the Thornbury Town Council gazebo.

🌧️ If the weather isn't playing ball, we'll move inside to our brand-new machine store – the green building to the left of the pavilion.

Are you aged 17-25 and looking to become a safer, more confident driver?

Join this FREE road safety and driver skills day at Yate Fire Station on 3 October, 10am to 3pm.

The day includes:
✅ An observed drive with a qualified skills observer
✅ Road safety presentations
✅ A realistic road traffic collision rescue demonstration
✅ Practical tips to improve safety and reduce driving costs
✅ Information on advanced driving opportunities

This is a fantastic opportunity to develop your driving skills, gain valuable experience, and learn how to stay safe on the roads.

Eel Tails: The Story of Eels in the Severn. Friday 23 October 7pm - 8.30pm

Join Thornbury Town Council and the Linking the Levels project to explore the remarkable story of European eels and their deep connections to the River Severn. Come along for an evening of science, history, and conversation celebrating one of our most mysterious native species.

Biodiversity Officer Sally Pattison will talk about the extraordinary lifecycle of these remarkable, yet sadly, critically endangered creatures. We will examine their ecological and cultural significance to our area and discuss how they are faring in our part of South Gloucestershire.

This is a free of charge event, but booking is essential as places are limited. Teas, coffees and biscuits will be available after the event alongside a chance for an informal chat about Thornbury’s waterways, including ways you can get involved by becoming a Water Guardian or River Detective. There will also be a chance to hear about the work of the Thornbury Town Council Climate and Nature Committee.

Would you like to make a mini pond for free?

Join Thornbury Town Council and Avon Wildlife Trust’s Community Nature Reserve team to learn about how introducing watery spaces into your garden can support wildlife.

We will talk about the benefits of ponds, tell you how and where to site them and what to include to maximise their wildlife benefit.

We will demonstrate how to set up a mini-pond, and you will get to take away a free starter kit to use at home. The starter kit will include the container, plants, gravel and cobbles for your very own mini pond. All you need to add is rainwater!

There will also be a chance to learn more about and sign up for the Thornbury Community Nature Reserve and chat over tea and coffee about how to help nature to thrive in Thornbury.

This is a free of charge event, but places are strictly limited, so booking is essential. The event is suitable for adults and children aged 10 and over. Please book one ticket for each household, specifying how many people plan to attend (maximum of 4 people per household). One pond kit will be provided per household.

This event is supported by Wessex Water’s Watermark Town scheme and Avon Wildlife Trust.

There are two workshop times to choose from: 1pm to 2.30pm or 3pm to 4.30pm. Booking opens on 28 August.

You may have spotted a hive of activity there recently and wondered why the underpass is currently closed to the public.

South Gloucestershire Council are installing a new art display in the underpass, which is expected to be completed on Monday 5 October 👩🏼‍🎨🖼️🖌️

There’s just one Unsung Hero Award in the 2027 Mayor’s Awards and this year we’re doing things a little differently!

You decide who deserves to be considered.

Nominate someone who quietly makes a difference in our community – perhaps someone who gives their time, helps others, looks after their neighbourhood or simply gets on with doing good things without expecting recognition.

Once nominations are in, our Town Councillors will look through all the nominations and choose the Unsung Hero for 2027.

So, who do you think deserves a little bit of recognition?

Put forward your Unsung Hero and let our Councillors know who you think should be celebrated! They will be invited to the Mayor's Awards ceremony at Thornbury Castle in February 2027 where the winner will receive dinner with their award.

The Sustainable Business Leadership Award is part of the Thornbury Mayor’s Awards 2027, recognising a local business that is making a real commitment to sustainability and inspiring others to do the same.

Do you know someone who goes the extra mile to help wildlife or create better habitats for nature?

Maybe it’s a young person who loves looking after wildlife, a resident who has transformed their garden into a haven for birds and insects, or a group creating spaces where nature can thrive. 🌱

The Wildlife Support & Habitat Creation Award is part of the Thornbury Mayor’s Awards 2027, celebrating people who are making a real difference for wildlife and biodiversity in our community.
