✈️☀️ Solo At Last For Dylan Westerby! ☀️✈️

Cadet Sgt Dylan Westerby, from 195 (Grimsby) Squadron, Central & East Yorkshire Wing, has attended the unit since November last year. Poor weather, and the usual frustrating crosswinds have hampered his progress. That said, he has shown resilience and determination in completing his course to solo standard.

Today, after a successful check flight with 645 VGS instructor Sqn Ldr Simon Johnston, he managed his first solo from RAF Topcliffe. Well done Dylan, from all the staff team at 645 VGS!

Remembering Flight Lieutenant Andrew (Andy) Lees, RAFVR(T).

It is with great sadness that we learned this week of the passing of Flight Lieutenant Andrew (Andy) Lees, former Adjutant of 645 Volunteer Gliding Squadron.

Andy dedicated the vast majority of his life to serving the Royal Air Force Air Cadets, primarily as a Volunteer Gliding Squadron instructor. He was initially attached to 635 Volunteer Gliding Squadron, then based at RAF Burtonwood. During the 1980s, the squadron relocated to BAE Samlesbury, where it remained for over 20 years. Following the closure of Samlesbury as an airfield in early 2009, 635 VGS co-located with 645 VGS at RAF Topcliffe before being officially disbanded in 2018.

As an A2* Gliding Instructor, Andy introduced countless cadets to the joy of flight, giving many their very first experience in the air and sending numerous others on their first solo flights. He often spoke with great pride about former cadets who had gone on to become RAF pilots, commercial airline pilots and senior officers. There is no doubt that many achieved remarkable careers, inspired by Andy’s encouragement, patience and unwavering commitment to developing young people.

Andy was instrumental in the successful move of 635 VGS across the Pennines and in establishing operations alongside 645 VGS at RAF Topcliffe. His calm, diplomatic and approachable nature ensured that both squadrons worked together seamlessly, fostering strong friendships and mutual respect between the staff of each unit.

Following the disbandment of 635 VGS, Andy joined 645 VGS as Adjutant, where he was welcomed with open arms. Even while facing ill health, he remained dedicated to the squadron, continuing to support its staff and cadets with characteristic professionalism and quiet determination for as long as he was able.

Andy was an outstanding member of the Royal Air Force Air Cadets and someone whose influence reached far beyond the airfield. His dedication, leadership and selfless service have left a lasting legacy through the thousands of young people whose lives he touched over many decades.

Everyone at 645 Volunteer Gliding Squadron will remember Andy with immense affection, gratitude and respect. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his wife, Lilian, his daughter, Nicola, and all of his family and friends at this very difficult time.

Blue skies and tailwinds, Andy. Thank you for your friendship, your dedication and your remarkable service. You will be greatly missed. ❤️

✈️ LEEMING CAMP 2026 ✈️

This weekend, 645 Volunteer Gliding Squadron were delighted to welcome eight Gliding Induction Flight (GIF) cadets from the RAF Leeming Summer Camp.

The cadets travelled from across North Region for the camp and, for every one of them, this was their very first experience of flying in cadets.

We were also pleased to be able to offer one of the visiting members of staff the opportunity to experience a glider flight, giving them an insight into the exciting flying opportunities available within the RAF Air Cadets

Back at camp they were given their ground school training by 642 Aerospace Ground School which qualified them for their Blue Wings!

We hope you all enjoyed your flights and look forward to welcoming you back to 645 VGS in the future!

✈️ 🏆 The Awards Keep Coming! G2 For Isaac Sinclair! 🏆✈️

Flight Staff Cadet (FSC) Isaac Sinclair, who has been a staff member at 645 VGS for over a year, has this weekend been awarded his Grade 2 (G2) Award.

Isaac joined the unit as a Flight Staff Cadet alongside his duties at 1027 (Jarrow) Squadron. He progressed through the Gliding Scholarship and Advanced Syllabus before completing the training elements towards his first graded pilot qualification. This all culminated in a successful check flight with 645 VGS Deputy Chief Flying Instructor (DCFI), Flt Lt Nige Gamble.

As a G2 Pilot, he will now be able to fly solo without a check for 90 days, providing he remains within flying currency. He will also prepare for the award of his Grade 1 (G1) Award, where once over 18, he will be able to fly cadets.

Well done Isaac, from all your colleagues at 645 VGS! 🏆

✈️💪🏼🤩 Air Cadets…Being Taught By Air Cadets! How Cool Is That?! 🤩💪🏼✈️

Yes, it’s true! All RAFAC members who complete a Gliding Scholarship to solo standard may apply to become a Flight Staff Cadet (FSC) at the VGS. In return for their hard work, they’ll be rewarded with gliding, with a view to becoming our next generation of instructors.

It’s a fantastic way to launch your flying career, just like our Senior FSC Lucas Elwell has done; Today in fact, he flew his first passenger on a Gliding Induction Flight (GIF), Cdt Hesali Lyanagamage from 2199 (Workington) Sqn. After completing the syllabus and associated groundschool, she will be eligible to wear her Blue Wings.

If you fancy a taste of RAFAC gliding, get yourself on the list next time a slot becomes available. If you’re 16 or older, why not apply for a Gliding Scholarship? Contact your OC/WAVo for more information.

✈️☀️ Super Solo For Lewis Joynes! ☀️✈️

Cadet Corporal (Cpl) Lewis Joynes, from 2388 (Castleford) Squadron, South & West Yorkshire Wing, has attended the unit over the last few months. With poor weather hampering his progress, he has shown resilience and determination in completing his course to solo standard.

Last weekend, his efforts paid off and after a quick check with instructor Flt Lt Anton Murfin, he managed his first solo from RAF Topcliffe. Well done Lewis, from all the staff team at 645 VGS!

🎉🙌🏻✈️ G1 For Our Senior Flight Staff Cadet Lucas Elwell! ✈️🙌🏻🎉

Today we saw our Senior Flight Staff Cadet (FSC) Cadet Warrant Officer (CWO) Lucas Elwell, achieving his Grade 1 (G1) award.

Lucas joined 645 VGS as a Flight Staff Cadet in 2023 alongside his role at 2527 (Lawnswood) Sqn, Central & East Yorkshire Wing. He has been committed to the VGS for almost three years and last year, became the most senior cadet on the unit. He will now deliver training to our visiting cadets, on gliding induction flights.

It’s a bittersweet occasion however, as Lucas has recently been accepted into the Royal Air Force as a pilot. In August, his duties with both RAFAC and the VGS will cease as he pursues his military flying career.

Congratulations on both your G1 and successful application to the RAF Lucas, from all your colleagues at 645 VGS, RAF Topcliffe. We’re glad to have played a small part in your quest to become a professional pilot!
