We would like to say thank you to Thaxted Fire Station for hosting our monthly training last night.

We brought together volunteers from Saffron Walden Community First Responders, Dunmow Community First Responders and the West Essex Falls Car to cover recent updates to resuscitation guidelines, view recent statistic, recap the key principles of Basic Life Support and discuss the challenges that we may face attending jobs in real world environments.

It was fantastic to see such strong collaboration, shared learning, and commitment to keeping our community safe.

Moments like this show the power of teamwork and partnership across our emergency services. πŸ’™πŸš‘πŸš’

The East of England Ambulance Service (EEAST) is holding a series of events to teach the public life-saving skills for Restart a Heart Day on Wednesday 16 October 2024.

EEAST responds to around 4,000 patients in cardiac arrest each year and good-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation, better known as CPR, greatly increases a patient’s chances of survival.

Survival rates from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in the UK remain stubbornly low, with fewer than one in 10 people surviving.

Every minute without CPR and defibrillation reduces a person’s chance of survival by 10% which demonstrates the importance of early CPR by members of the
public.
At the events the public will learn what to do if they encounter a person in cardiac arrest, how to perform CPR and use a defibrillator.

This should give the public confidence to know what to do in this most time critical of medical emergencies.

Jonathan Needle, Community Response Manager at EEAST, said:

β€œWe are hoping to train life-saving skills to as many people as possible at the events we are holding for Restart a Heart Day.

β€œBy learning CPR you can help improve survival rates from out-of-hospital cardiac arrests which are way below what they should be in the UK.

β€œ80 per cent of cardiac arrests happen at home so learning CPR could mean that you are helping a loved one’s chances of survival.”

Thank you to everyone who visited us at The Thaxted Fayre today. It was a pleasure meeting so many of you and sharing Basic Life Support (BLS) and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) techniques.

Sadly, 30% of UK adults are unlikely to perform CPR if they witness someone suffer a cardiac arrest*.

Lives are at risk every day because not enough people know how to perform CPR, so we hope that together, we have helped change that statistic for our community today.

If you didn't get a chance to visit the team today, check out the resources on The St John's Ambulance website at www.sja.org.uk and the NHS website at www.nhs.uk.

*In 2018, the British Heart Foundation commissioned researchers from the University of Warwick Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrest Outcome (OHCAO) Registry team, who worked with YouGov to survey over 4,000 UK adults. Participants were asked about their knowledge of CPR and whether they would feel confident performing it on someone experiencing a cardiac arrest.
