West Berkshire Therapy Centre

West Berkshire Therapy Centre We’re a specialised gym, with power assisted exercise equipment. We’re a registered charity and we rely on donations. All offers of help will be welcome.

Our facility is designed to support people from the local community by helping to strengthen their physical and mental well-being. West Berkshire Therapy Centre is located half way between Newbury and Thatcham. It is a very specialised gym, equipped with power-assisted exercise equipment, for the benefit of disabled people from the local community. Our extensive research has shown that this facili

ty will help people who suffer from a wide range of disabling conditions:
neurological disorders,
arthritis,
strokes,
cardiac or lung problems,
dementia,
post-operative rehabilitation,
learning difficulties and many others. Following assessment from one of our registered physiotherapists, Centre users will be able to receive exercise therapy provided by a range of carefully designed and selected machines, easing stiff or reluctant muscles, giving them more strength and co-ordination, helping also to manage weight, improve circulation, reduce the risks of serious health problems in later years and more feelings of well-being. We have considerable support from many local voluntary groups and many local clinicians. Our premises are just off Lower Way in Thatcham, so are easy to get to. Everything is on the ground floor, including a disabled loo and a small rest area. There is space for those in wheelchairs to get around and although the equipment is motorised, to provide the exercise therapy, it is quiet and enjoyable to use. Our staff will give a helping hand if needed and carers will be welcome. We are a not for profit charitable organisation and invite voluntary contributions at the lowest rates compatible with providing an excellent service for as many people as possible. We can also offer slight discounts to those who take out membership. You can support us with a donation via our website: http://www.westberkshiretherapycentre.org.uk/

Many disabled people find it difficult to take as much exercise as they want or as is generally recommended. Our power-assisted equipment provides the opportunity to move every major muscle in the body, with the equipment doing the work, so even very weak muscles can be exercised without effort from you. Not only is this generally good for your overall health, but the stronger you can get, the easier it is likely to be for you to carry out important tasks of daily living in safety and comfort. In due course we would also like to offer a community hydrotherapy pool. This needs a larger building and we continue to seek offers of help to secure a suitable plot of land. In the meantime our specialised power-assisted equipment may be able to make a big difference to your overall well-being. We are grateful for the support of:

🎉Our new machines have arrived 🎉

Exciting times for our Therapy Centre 💪
We’ve had 3 new power assisted pieces of equipment delivered this week.

Our lovely volunteer Amanda demonstrates the new pieces for you in the pictures:

👉Tummy Crunch
👉Ab Pullover
👉Rotary Torso

Our power-assisted exercise equipment accommodates people who are unable to attend conventional gyms. The machines allow our clients to put in as much or as little physical effort as they wish, whilst helping to maintain and strengthen their muscles, which helps to prevent or delay further deterioration in muscle function.

You can review and learn more about each piece of equipment by visiting our page about the gym below: https://www.westberkshiretherapycentre.org.uk/gym

West Berkshire Therapy Centre provides service for our local community. Every month it supports over three hundred people of all ages with a wide range of physical needs helping improve their quality of life, reduce social isolation and provide practical support that many families would otherwise struggle to access. The Centre’s impact cannot be overstated; for many it is a lifeline that helps people remain healthier and more independent for longer. This is why we’ve made it our goal to develop further and help as many people as we can.

We’ve been told that some people have experienced difficulty in registering their comments in support of the proposed new hydro therapy pool and therapy centre, for those that might need help this, here is the process that should be followed:

Spirit of Christmas

A warm welcome from Santa for Thatcham Mayor Petra Pemberton got the Christmas season off to a flying start at the West Berkshire Therapy Centre's festive event on Saturday (Dec 6).

Around 60 guests attended the evening at Harts Hill Road, and enjoyed a variety of activities and a buffet tea. The occasion raised over £2,600 for the Centre, a charity which relies on donations from users and supporters to provide its powered-assisted exercise therapy.

Prizes for the raffle included a considerable number of hampers containing donated goods from Therapy Centre users and their families. Prize Bingo featured vouchers and gifts provided by local concerns, among them Kennet & Avon Canal Trust; Arlington Arts; Whitchurch Silk Mill; Ugly Duckling; Sandford Springs; Highclere Castle. The home-made Cake Stall and Tombola proved to be successful fund-raisers.

The event was run by volunteers at the Therapy Centre.

The work of the Centre has been further supported in recent weeks by a number of generous donations totalling over £7,000, including from Tesco via 'customer choice' tokens collection at Hungerford; Cold Ash Parish Council; Greenham Parish Council; and the Gerald Palmer Eling Trust which has also pledged support for the next two years.

The unique power-assisted exercise makes a real difference to independence, well-being, and everyday life for clients with a wide range of challenges. Clients may be coping with a long-term . health condition, or recuperating after operation or injury. They may be wheelchair users. All will have been assessed by Therapy Centre staff at an initial appointment, and then start on a bespoke programme of exercise.

The smart machines at the Centre in Thatcham do as much or as little of the work required, as strength and mobility improves the machines will do less and less.

West Berkshire Therapy Centre is an independent community charity founded in 2014. It is not part of the NHS or West Berkshire Council
