The planned closure of Thatcham Post Office would be a huge loss for our community.

I’m working with the council, Post Office Ltd, and Newbury Weekly News, but we need to show just how strongly people feel.

Please sign the petition and help protect these vital services:

Last Saturday, I joined the and Against Sewage Paddle Out Protest, and it was a clear reminder that the people of Newbury and West Berkshire have had enough.

Enough of water companies treating our rivers like open sewers. Enough of footing the bill for years of underinvestment in our systems. Enough of regulators protecting water bosses instead of the environment.

In 2024 alone, our rivers endured over 8,900 hours of sewage discharges, with the River Pang suffering the highest number of illegal spills of any chalk stream analysed. These are some of the rarest and most fragile ecosystems on Earth, and they’re being poisoned while water bosses profit.

Saturday’s protest showed that our community is ready to stand up for our rivers and the wildlife that depends on them. People here care deeply about the River Pang, the River Lambourn, the River Kennet, and they refuse to watch them decline any further.

Enough really is enough. It’s time for action, accountability, and clean rivers.

Here’s a great initiative from the Liberal Democrats to counter the negativity and decisiveness of others.

And let’s make it local too, comment below on what makes West Berkshire great.

West Berkshire has the lowest pharmacy provision in the country, leaving many patients waiting far longer than they should for essential prescriptions.

That’s why independent pharmacies like Medwell Chemist are so important for our community. They help fill the gap left by recent closures, offering shorter queues, a more personal service and the kind of flexibility that larger chains often can’t provide.

I visited Medwell Chemist on Bartholomew Street last week, and it was great to see first‑hand the difference a well-run local pharmacy can make for patients who simply want reliable, accessible care close to home.

🔶🔶🔶No local elections here in West Berkshire this time round, but Liberal Democrats did stunningly well across the country. We are the voice for those who want real change, not dangerous populism. For those who want to build Britain up, not burn it all down.

West Berkshire Council has published its latest Environment Strategy Annual Progress Report.

The council claims to be showing strong progress in reducing carbon emissions.

The report, covering July 2024 to July 2025, highlights a 38 per cent reduction in the council’s operational emissions compared with its 2019/20 baseline.

It means emissions from council buildings are now lower than during the Covid-19 lockdown.

Key factors behind this progress include more accurate site specific data for schools, reduced staff mileage through greater use of pool cars, energy efficiency upgrades at leisure centres, the installation of solar panels across council sites and the switch to vegetable oll for food waste vehicles.

The report also sets out an updated Pathway to Net Zero, mapping major schemes like the Northcroft Leisure Centre decarbonisation project, a four-year solar PV installation programme across council buildings and schools, and continued transition to low carbon fleet options.

Stuart Gourley (Lib Dem, Newbury Clay Hill), executive member for environment and highways at West Berkshire Council, said: “This report shows that West Berkshire is not only reducing its carbon footprint but building real momentum towards our net zero target.

“What matters now is that we keep going.

“With major decarbonisation projects under way, expanded EV infrastructure, new solar installations and a refreshed Environment Strategy, we are well placed to accelerate progress and deliver practical, evidence-based action that benefits our residents, our financial sustainability, our environment and sustainability, and future generations.”
