🌱 Supporting the recovery of our eel population 🌱

The Severn Ham Committee is pleased to have been involved in the Environment Agency’s Assisted Migration Project for glass eels.

As part of this important initiative, glass eels were successfully released upstream of the Upper Lode weir, helping them bypass migration barriers and reach vital freshwater habitats where they can mature and thrive.

Projects like this play a key role in supporting the recovery of the European eel and protecting the long-term health of our river system. We’re proud to work alongside the Environment Agency and other partners on practical conservation efforts that make a real difference.🐟💧

The shad are back at Diglis Fish Pass which means they've also successfully navigated the fish pass on the Upper Lode Weir on the Ham!

Why not book on to one of the tours at Diglis to see the fish close up. Details below:

🌿 Thank you! 🌿

A big thank you to GEDA, Severn Trent, Dalcour McLaren and their fantastic community volunteers for carrying out repairs to the footpath on the Ham.

The path has been laid using self-binding gravel, which will continue to compact over the coming weeks with use and rainfall, gradually blending in and matching the existing path on the Ham.

This improvement will make the route easier to use for wheelchairs and buggies, helping more people to get out and enjoy the Ham, and take in that great view of the Abbey.

We really appreciate everyone’s time, effort and support in helping to improve this well-used and much-loved route for the community. 👏🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️

The skylarks and curlew have been seen back on the Ham! 😍

Conditions are tough for the birds this year, as to date there has been little grass growth in which to hide their nests, so as the water levels drop and they start to make their nests, please help by keeping dogs on leads whilst on the Ham.

Thank you in advance from all the ground nesting birds.

When floodplain meadows like the Ham flood, it’s not a disaster, it’s nature doing its thing. 🌊🌱

Seasonal flooding refreshes the soil, spreads nutrients, and creates rich feeding and resting areas for birds. Waders and wildfowl make the most of the shallow waters, and there’s something special about seeing swans gliding across the Ham, knowing that in a few months it will be a mass of buttercups again.

These watery moments are essential for healthy rivers, resilient landscapes, and thriving birdlife 💚

It's a beautiful morning on the Ham.
