Tenterden, Kent - The Jewel of the Weald

Tenterden, Kent - The Jewel of the Weald Tenterden has a fascinating history, a wealth of architecture, and excellent shopping. Come & explore! www.mytenterden.co.uk run by Sue Ferguson, My Tenterden

See how the Georgian buildings mingle with tall Victorian houses and tiny cottages; brick and stucco blend easily alongside traditional Kent tile and weatherboard. If you are a painter bring your easel and sketchpad, you won’t be disappointed. There are shops, cafes, restaurants, pubs, each with a unique character. Find a quiet spot in a café or pub, and when the sun is shining follow the tables a

nd chairs outside, relax and watch the world go by. Tenterden has no shortage of places to eat and drink. Did I mention the tree-lined greens? You might have the impression that you are walking through a park rather than through a town centre High Street. We have many quirky independent shops rubbing shoulders with some familiar high street chains. Charity shops for bargain hunters, antiques for browsers and cognoscenti, all the way up to sophisticated emporia for the more discerning. Market day is Friday. And there are book fairs and craft fairs some Saturdays. For historic places and garden lovers Smallhythe Place, Sissinghurst Castle and Hole Park are close by. Steam trains from Tenterden Town Station go all the way to Bodiam Castle through wonderful countryside. Throughout the year there are special events mostly revolving around food, real ale, cider and music. page www.facebook.com/tenterden

Just announced by Ashford Borough Council
"Primark to open in County Square Ashford: County Square has today announced that Primark plans to open a new store in the centre, expected to open in the second half of 2027. Primark will take on the former Debenhams and Select units as its new home, which will be merged to form one large 29,000 sq. ft. retail space, spanning almost half of the upper oval. Project work will shortly commence to configure the unit, so it is ready for fit-out. The new store will offer customers Primark’s most-loved ranges across fashion, kidswear, beauty, lifestyle and home, plus its popular Click & Collect service. Primark will join over 45 stores in County Square, including established fashion brands such as New Look and Next.

Kari Rodgers, UK Retail Director at Primark said: “We know there’s been a lot of demand for us to bring Primark to Ashford, so we’re pleased to confirm plans to open in County Square later next year. With the demand for great value clothing higher than ever, we’re looking forward to bringing our offer to the town and becoming part of the local community.”

Stacey Bell, Centre Manager, commented: “We are thrilled that County Square will be the new home for Primark in Ashford. The brand’s arrival is a fantastic boost for the shopping centre, providing more choice of fashion, beauty and homeware for shoppers whilst supporting and creating jobs for our local community. We are working hard behind the scenes to transform the space ready for fit-out and opening next year. We predict the new store will also attract shoppers to County Square from further afield and are confident Primark’s opening and presence will strengthen our vibrant retail mix. The highly anticipated announcement marks another chapter in County Square’s rich history and our ongoing commitment to creating a destination shopping venue for the town centre.”

During the project, the centre will keep customers up to date via social media channels and monthly newsletters with the opening date expected to be announced at a later stage."

Wealden Business Group news

A fascinating and inspiring start to the day at the Wealden Business Group networking breakfast at Brunch & Brew in Tenterden, where we welcomed Cllr Jane Mills, Mayor of Tenterden, and Ginny Hodge, Tenterden Town Council’s Tourism and Business Officer.

Jane and Ginny shared the wide-ranging activities, achievements and aspirations that make Tenterden such a special place to live, work and visit. From the town’s rich heritage and thriving business community to its charities, caring services, walking routes and wildlife activities, there was plenty to celebrate and discuss.

Jane also highlighted her chosen charities for her year as Mayor of Tenterden – Tenterden Counselling Service and The Mildred Trust – both of which provide invaluable support within our community.

The presentation explored how Tenterden is using its unique heritage and attractions to draw more visitors to the town and increase footfall for local businesses. Ginny also promoted ATTA (Ashford and Tenterden Tourism Association), the local tourism partnership run by Ashford Borough Council, which helps support and promote tourism across the area.

Tenterden is fortunate to have a dedicated Tourism and Business Officer. Ginny provides information, support, advice and guidance to local businesses and tourism organisations, while actively promoting the town as a vibrant hub for residents and visitors alike. Based at the Town Hall, Ginny is often out and about meeting businesses and organisations, and is always happy to discuss ideas, opportunities and support for local enterprises.

Thank you to Jane and Ginny for an informative and engaging presentation, showcasing the passion, commitment and vision that continues to drive Tenterden forward.
