💬 “I can finally breathe again.”

After losing her husband, Penny was left managing everything on her own for the first time - while coping with grief and the worry of keeping up with household bills.

Despite working 30 hours a week, Penny was still feeling anxious about making ends meet and wasn’t aware she might be entitled to extra support.

With help from our Money Matters team, Penny was gently guided through her options. She received support to apply for Universal Credit to top up her wages - something she wasn't aware she would be eligible for, along with advice to help manage her energy costs and day-to-day finances.

This support has helped ease some of that pressure, improve her wellbeing, and give her the confidence to reconnect with her local community.

Penny is now urging others who are struggling financially to not suffer in silence and reach out for support. 💙

If you’re worried about money or unsure what help might be available, get in touch with our Money Matters team.

World Cup support

The World Cup is underway, but we know support is needed all year round, not just during big events.

We’re here every day to help people feel safe at home.

Our teams offer confidential, non-judgmental support for anyone experiencing domestic abuse.

You can reach out at any time, or speak to us in person at our housing hubs from 9am to 1pm:
📍Stirchley Hub – Mondays and Tuesdays
📍Wellington Hub – Thursdays and Fridays

While many will enjoy the matches together, this period can be challenging for some. Football doesn’t cause abuse, but heightened emotions can increase the risk of harmful behaviour.

We’re working with partners including Women's Aid, Axis Counselling, Cranstoun and Telford & Wrekin Council to make sure support is there when it’s needed.

If you need advice, support or someone to talk to, please reach out. We’re here for you all year round.

Across Housing Plus Group, our teams use their volunteer leave to support local causes that matter – and we’re so proud of the impact they have 💚

Last year our colleagues gave 840 hours to support causes that matter to them.

Andrew Hawkins works as a Retirement Living Officer at one of our schemes in Shropshire. He also gives his time to help young people prepare for the move to secondary school as a member of Shrewsbury & Oswestry’s Crucial Crew Committee – who he has been with for 17 years.

Each year, Andrew uses his volunteer day to help deliver the annual safety event helping local children build confidence and learn how to stay safe.

Andrew said: “I love that Housing Plus Group give us the time to give back to our communities. I’ve used my volunteer day to lend a hand at Crucial Crew for many years and it’s really rewarding – it's great to know I’ve helped young people make safe, informed decisions as they take that next step.

“It’s a busy day and it flies by, but it’s a brilliant way to step outside your everyday routine and give something back.”

Thank you, Andrew, and to all our colleagues who give their time to support others – this Volunteers’ Week, and all year round 👏

This week the Care Plus Engagement and Volunteering Team have been celebrating the amazing work their volunteers do 👏🩷

Care Plus currently have 56 volunteers, with ages ranging from 18 right through to 84! They cover a variety of roles, from working one-to-one befriending or dog waking, to working within communities to put on activities, coffee mornings and help out with gardening.

Last year they've given residents just under 4,000 hours of their time, working around paid work, family life and other volunteering commitments.

Alison and Louise from the Engagement and Volunteering Team said:
"We would like to personally thank them all for being so fantastic, it really is a great honour to work alongside them and see the pleasure it gives to so many of our residents."

We'll be sharing more of their stories after the Care Plus award ceremonies in Staffordshire, when their volunteers will receive special recognition awards.

📱 New look for our customer surveys and your chance to have your say📱

Following our recent merger, our surveys will now feature Housing Plus Group branding instead of Wrekin Housing Group.

While the look has changed, the purpose hasn’t - these surveys are your chance to tell us what’s working and where we can do better.
Your feedback helps shape the services we provide, so please take a few minutes to share your experience if you receive one.

How to know if your survey is genuine:

🛡️ We’ll never ask for sensitive personal or financial information
🛡️ Always branded Housing Plus Group

If you're unsure about any message that appears to be from us, please get in touch before responding.

🧸 Meet the residents knitting for the emergency services 🧸

A weekly Knit and Natter group at The Coppice ShireLiving in Shrewsbury has created 60 comfort bears for local firefighters, to support children and vulnerable adults at distressing incidents.

The group recently visited Shrewsbury Fire Station to hand them over and see how they’ll be used 🚒

Watch Manager Jez Stephenson said:

"Trauma teddy bears offer comfort when it’s needed most. Given out by fire crews at distressing incidents, they help calm children and vulnerable people, providing reassurance and something familiar to hold onto during a frightening time. It’s a small act of kindness that can make a big difference at the scene."
