Two work parties. We are starting earlier, 9.30 because of the weather. First the shafts near the winding house and round the picnic tables strimmed. Then the winding house before and after. This week we started on Granville Road from the kissing gate opposite the car park. Removing overhanging branches and strimming down to the canal. We will continue all along Granville Road, reopening the path and litter picking as we go. I am sending a poster about an event on the park. Please come along.

FRIENDS OF GRANVILLE LOCAL NATURE RESERVE

WORK PARTY. THURSDAY 9TH JULY, MEET AT THE MAIN CAR PARK 10 AM

WORKING FROM 10 TO 12 AND BEYOND.

TASK is to continue strimming the shafts opposite the Winding house.

Cut back overhanging vegetation the steps in the main car park.

Cut back overhanging branches, brambles on the bridle path.

Tools required: brushcutter, loppers, rakes

Please remember water and hats if required as the forecast is hot.

Our work party on Thursday 11th was cancelled because of the weather.

Our work party on Thursday 25th was completely different. Phew! It was hot! hot! hotter!
One of our team began at 7.30 to oil the badger sculpture. Then walk across to the park to oil the fox and eventually the owl. All the sculpture look smarter.
The rest of us started early also while it was cooler. Two of us set about the Muxton Bridge Colliery beam engine platform which you can see was covered in vegetation. Then, across to the area opposite the Winding House, to strim the area of the caped shafts. You can read all about these in the Heritage Trail leaflet which you can find in the main car park.
The task for two of us was to clear the vegetation around the DEEP WATER signs by the canal.

I have also included two photos of a beautiful moth we spotted. It is the Scarlet Tiger Moth.

Once again fly tipping at Granville opposite the canal. Luckily a car stopped and the person put their rubbish back into the car apart from the fridge. It was reported and a T&W enforcement officer was there. They will take any fly tipping and go through it with a fine tooth comb to find addresses etc. The fly tipper will then be fined.

Today’s work party began at Muxton marsh. Our task was to walk the Freehold Pitmound removing any fallen trees and cutting back branches overhanging the paths. Within two minutes of setting off we were soaked with hailstones. What a start! Fortunately the sun appeared and we dried off. We split into groups and met on the marsh. It was a lovely walk through the trees especially hearing the birds singing away. The meadows are looking lovely, though no sign of orchids yet.
