Posting on behalf of Teignbridge Archaeological Society

My name is Jowan Albon, Secretary of the Teignbridge Archaeological Society.

I am writing to my to you to ask for permission for some information to be disseminated to your parishioners, on a new exciting project that the Teignbridge Archaeological Society are undertaking.

It is a test pitting project, which aims to uncover the stories of the various towns and villages in Teignbridge, and also to give volunteers and members the opportunity for gaining practical experience, to be able to pursue archaeology as a career, hobby or as part of their educational journey.

Could Your Garden Help Uncover Local History?
The Teignbridge Gardens Project – Volunteers & Gardens Wanted

The Teignbridge Archaeological Society is launching an exciting new community archaeology initiative: The Teignbridge Gardens Project.

We are looking for volunteers and local residents across Teignbridge and South Devon who may be interested in hosting a small archaeological test pit in their garden.

A test pit is a small 1m x 1m excavation, carefully dug to investigate the history of a site through finds such as pottery, clay pipes, building material, and other artefacts. Even small discoveries can help us better understand the story of our villages and communities, and ultimately Teignbridge, through time.

The project also aims to give local people the opportunity to gain practical archaeological skills and hands-on experience, whether they have a long-standing interest in history or are simply curious to learn something new.
No previous experience is necessary.

If you would be interested in volunteering or offering your garden for a test pit, please contact:
Jowan Albon
Secretary, Teignbridge Archaeological Society

We would be delighted to hear from anyone interested in helping uncover Teignbridge’s past.

Thank you so much in advance.

Many thanks,
Jowan Albon
Secretary
Teignbridge Archaeological Society

Crisis and resilience fund
We use one application form to help residents apply for financial support across different schemes.

What support is available
Crisis and Resilience Fund (CaRF)

The Crisis and Resilience Fund helps people on a low income who are facing a sudden financial crisis. It is funded by the Department for Work and Pensions and managed locally.

The fund can provide:

One-off financial help for urgent or essential needs
Advice on budgeting, debt, and money management
Support delivered with local voluntary and community organisations
A crisis could include:

Damage to your home or belongings from events like flooding, fire, or gas leaks
Accidents, physical or mental health emergencies, including hospital discharge
Relationship breakdowns, including domestic abuse, where you need to move quickly
Breakdown of essential items, such as a boiler or medical equipment
Loss of income that affects your ability to pay for essentials
A sudden loss of income, such as redundancy or reduced working hours
Who the fund can help:

You must be aged 16 or over to apply.

Support is available to Teignbridge residents who are on a low income or get means-tested benefits. When we assess your application, we will look at your overall circumstances, including any extra needs or difficult situations affecting you or your household. This could include, for example:

health conditions or disability within the household
someone in the household is of pension age
children living in the property
fuel poverty or difficulty affording energy costs, including heating oil prices
living in a cold, damp or hard-to-heat home
living in an unreliable or insecure housing situation, for example difficulty paying rent or a mortgage, having to move often, overcrowding, or unsafe living conditions
Help with heating oil

The Crisis and Resilience Fund can help residents who use heating oil and are affected by rising fuel costs. To qualify, you must be on a low income or receive means-tested benefits.

There are other Energy support schemes available that could also help if you aren’t eligible under this scheme.

Housing Payments
Housing payment is extra help towards rent. It is not a benefit.

We may award this if you need extra help with your rent on top of the support you get, or will get, through Housing Benefit or the housing element of Universal Credit.

You may be able to get help if:

your benefits do not cover your full rent or,
you need help with rent in advance or a deposit to move, and you currently receive Housing Benefit or the housing element of Universal Credit at your current address
Help with Council Tax

If you are struggling to pay your Council Tax, support may be available.

This could include:

Extra help on top of Council Tax Reduction if it does not cover your full bill
Other schemes that help with Council Tax payments
We will use your application to work out which support is most suitable for you.

Help if you are struggling with or in an urgent financial crisis

Five Teignbridge beaches recognised in awards

Five beaches in Teignbridge have been recognised for their quality in the prestigious Blue Flag and Seaside Awards for summer 2026.

Dawlish Warren achieved the highest award with the internationally recognised Blue Flag Award while Dawlish Town beach, Coryton Cove, Teignmouth and Ness Cove were all awarded the coveted Seaside Award.

The Blue Flag and Seaside Awards are designed to raise standards across England’s coastline and inland waters while shining a spotlight on the country’s top beaches. They inform the public about which beaches offer a safe, clean and well-managed space for them to enjoy.

Beaches are assessed on safety, sustainable tourism and environmental education. To achieve an award they must meet and maintain a series of stringent environmental, educational, safety and accessibility criteria including:

Safety and services such as first aid and lifeguards, where necessary
Environmental information including displaying details about local ecosystems
Environmental management including litter and waste
Water quality: blue flag beaches must meet the ‘excellent’ water quality standard as set out in the EU Bathing Water Directive while Seaside Awards for designated bathing waters must meet, as a minimum, the ‘sufficient’ standard.

A Teignbridge District Council spokesperson said: “Achieving the Blue Flag Award for Dawlish Warren and the Seaside Awards for Coryton Cove, Dawlish Town, Ness Cove and Teignmouth reflect our commitment to maintaining clean, safe beaches that meet environmental and water quality standards. We hope that by flying these flags we will encourage residents and visitors to enjoy a day on the beach at our resorts.”

Blue Flag, the world’s most recognised award for beaches and marinas, is an environmental education programme managed by Keep Britain Tidy on behalf of the Foundation for Environmental Education.

Keep Britain Tidy’s Chief Executive, Allison Ogden-Newton OBE, said: “England is fortunate to boast some of the world’s finest beaches, and it’s encouraging to see this reflected in the awards to Teignmouth, Ness Cove, Coryton Cove, Dawlish and Dawlish Warren signalling its high standards to all who visit or live nearby.

“Everybody involved in these achievements should feel proud of their ongoing work to care for and enhance these important local blue spaces.”

Teignbridge is very grateful to Dawlish Town Council, for funding the Blue Flag Award for Dawlish Warren and the Seaside Awards for Dawlish Town beach and Coryton Cove, Teignmouth Town Council, for funding the Seaside award for Teignmouth beach, and Shaldon Parish Council, for funding the Seaside award for the Ness beach.
