Times Bar Bomb atrocity remembered with dignity 50 years on.

It was an honour to join with the local community, colleagues and most importantly the families of Robert Groves and Edward McMurray this evening.

Many of those gathered tonight shared their own memories of that fateful Saturday evening and the aftermath.

Huge thanks to the organisers for an excellently delivered memorial event and for the opportunity to say a few words before introducing a special song written to commemorate the victims.

Well done also to Pride Of The Shore Flute Band who led the parade and musicial accompaniment of the service so well.

As I said in my remarks - the terrorists failed to break this community then and they never will.

I’ve stood on the ground in many riot situations. Most people commenting haven’t a clue what they’re talking about.

Carla, Diane, Jonathan and our Councillors were in Scarva doing the hard thing. They weren’t there for selfies or social media posts. They were there to provide leadership, keep calm heads and help ensure a difficult situation did not become a worse one.

Those who were actually there know the role they played.

𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗕𝗲 𝗔𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗿𝘃𝗮 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲 – 𝗗𝗨𝗣

DUP representatives have said that significant questions will be asked over coming days about the handling of today’s events in Scarva.

They said, “We are thankful that today’s events passed off without any serious incidents. The combined efforts of the local community and representatives in Scarva were able to reduce tensions amongst those who had gathered for the counter-protest.

We will be seeking a meeting with the PSNI to seek answers form the PSNI about the operational decisions that were taken within the village. This not only served to increase disruption to residents but many of those on the ground felt did not help reduce anxiety and tensions.

DUP representatives expressed concerns early in the morning about a significant police presence on the bridge which blocked access to the location specified for the protest. Residents and participants deserve clarity on this and other issues including whether evidence was gathered to identify any breaches of the determination issued in relation to the parade including the presence of a banner with the antisemitic “from the river to the sea” slogan on it.

We would pay tribute to the leadership of local DUP Councillors who assisted us throughout the day. They played a crucial role engaging with the community and maintaining calm.

The fact that the event passed without major incident is welcome, but it should not prevent a full examination of how matters were handled. We will continue to pursue answers and ensure the concerns of the local community are properly addressed.”

Today marked Day Five, and the penultimate day, of the Somme 110 Walk. We set off from Dungannon War Memorial at 11am and finished just after 3pm at the Cookstown Cenotaph. Brilliant day of walking, teamwork and community spirit.

Special thank you to the ladies from Cookstown RBLs Women's section who had a fantastic spread ready for us when we reached Cookstown!!

We were proud to help raise funds for two incredible charities:
❤️ The Somme Association & Somme Museum
💛 Air Ambulance Northern Ireland 🚁

Today marks the 82nd anniversary of the 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘆 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗡𝗲𝗽𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗮𝘀 𝗗-𝗗𝗮𝘆 - the largest seaborne invasion in history.

The Royal Ulster Rifles were the only British regiment to deploy both airborne and seaborne battalions. 1st Battalion (Airborne) and 2nd Battalion (Seaborne)

𝟭𝘀𝘁 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗔𝗶𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗲): Landed in the evening via Airspeed Horsa gliders at Landing Zone N near Ranville. As part of the 6th Airlanding Brigade, they were tasked with expanding the eastern perimeter of the fragile Orne River bridgehead.

𝟮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗦𝗲𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗲): Landed at midday on Queen Red beach (part of the Sword assault zone). After advancing through Lion-sur-Mer, they pushed through heavy German resistance toward the high ground to help secure the approaches to Caen.

We can't promise that members will be braving the heights like a few did this evening though!
