A former teacher has been jailed after pleading guilty to seven charges of abusing three children.

Appearing before Swindon Crown Court today (04/06) Chris Fox, 39, from Pinehurst in Swindon was given a nine year custodial sentence, of which he will serve five years and three months in jail.

Judge Jason Taylor also indicated that Fox must serve the remaining three years and nine months on extended licence.

In addition, he will have to abide by an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

The court heard how the former teacher, who ran an archery club, had worked at various schools in Swindon.

He had groomed his young victims, and offered them gifts, in order to gain their trust.

Judge Taylor said that Fox ‘cynically and manipulatively took advantage’ for his own sexual gratification.

A man who was acting as a juror in a trial has been sentenced after admitting carrying out research during the trial, which he then shared with other jurors.

In November 2024, Peter Taylor, 34, of Eastcott Hill, Swindon, was a juror for a trial relating to sexual offences.

During the trial, Taylor researched the partner of one of the victims who had been mentioned during the trial.

When the jury was sent out for deliberation, Taylor asked his fellow jurors if they had also researched the partner, who had previously been jailed, stating he was “really not a nice guy at all”.

The foreperson passed Taylor’s actions to the court clerk and Taylor was dismissed from the jury. The incident was then passed to Wiltshire Police to investigate.

The trial subsequently continued with 11 jurors, concluding in a hung jury and a retrial.

In interview, Taylor gave a full admission. He was subsequently charged with carrying out research during the trial period and sharing research with other jurors – both offences under the Juries Act.

In a hearing at Gloucester Crown Court today (04/06), Taylor was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment, suspended for 18 months.

DC Ashleigh Moran said: “Taylor’s actions could easily have led to the entire case collapsing, potentially stopping victims from getting justice.

“Had that have been the case and the trial not continued due to Taylor’s actions, the Judge said Taylor would have been looking at an immediate custodial sentence.

“It is imperative that jurors base their verdicts solely on the evidence and testimony presented in the courtroom.

“I hope this investigation shows we take offences under the Juries Act incredibly seriously and we will look to investigate and prosecute those who breach the act.”

A driver caught with cannabis in his system has been disqualified from driving for three years.

On December 29 last year, officers sighted a vehicle of interest in Kingswood Avenue, Swindon.

Officers blocked in the vehicle in Kingswood Surgery car park, and the driver – Selvaraj Amuthanathan, 42, of Chickerell Road, Park North – was seen to have glazed pupils and smelled of cannabis.

He was arrested following a positive drugs test and subsequently charged with drug driving after blood tests showed a considerable amount of cannabis in his system.

In a hearing at Swindon Magistrates’ Court last Thursday (28/05), he was disqualified from driving for three years, after which he will need to complete an extended test. He was also fined £120.

PC Hobbs of the Roads Policing Unit said: “Drug driving is one of the fatal five offences for good reason.

“Smoking cannabis will significantly impair your ability to drive, slowing your reactions, distorting your perception of time and distance and reducing your awareness of your surroundings.

“Amuthanathan now faces a lengthy spell of time off the roads.”

We have secured a full closure order of a property in Somerville Road, Walcot, following ongoing issues with antisocial behaviour.

The order was granted this morning by Swindon Magistrates’ Court and means only council employees, their contractors or the emergency services can enter.

Full closure orders are legal mechanisms to completely shut down a property, including for residents or owners.

PC Dave Thompson from Swindon Central South NPT said: “This address and the resident have been the cause of significant antisocial behaviour and nuisance over the recent months therefore I am pleased that the court have a granted a full closure order.

“Since the last order expired, there have been nearly 40 calls relating to the address which shows how much the local residents have had to put up with.

“This order will provide some much-needed respite from the issues that have been caused.

“We have worked extremely closely with Swindon Borough Council to gather the evidence which was put to the court today.”
