There has been a worrying drop in the number of people coming forward for cervical screening, with around 30% of eligible women and people with a cervix in Swindon - about 21,000 - overdue or not yet booked in.

The screening helps to detect abnormalities within the cervix and prevent the potential development of cervical cancer.

So, if you've been invited, please don't delay and book in today - it could just save your life.🩷

And for our staff, we're proud to have a dedicated clinic at the hospital, making it easier for them to have this important health check.

The BMA has announced that the planned industrial action (Monday 15 – Friday 19 June) has been called off.

While this late change means some disruption to services is unavoidable, we are working quickly to restore services wherever possible.

We are reviewing previously affected appointments and will contact patients directly if these can now go ahead. Appointments that have already been cancelled will remain cancelled unless you are contacted by us.

Our Emergency Department and Urgent Treatment Centre remain open as usual.

Thank you for your patience and understanding πŸ’™

There are minor injury units in the local area that are able to treat most injuries that are not serious or life-threatening.

They might be a slightly longer drive for you, but they are likely to have much shorter wait times and provide a really high standard of care.

Visiting an minor injury unit also means our Emergency Department staff can focus their efforts on treating those who are most unwell at Great Western Hospitals.

When a local resident had ear ache recently, she didn't book a GP appointment or head to the Emergency Department.

Instead, she walked into a local pharmacy and spoke to the pharmacist – who prescribed antibiotics on the spot.πŸ’Š

That's because pharmacists can now treat seven common conditions and prescribe medication when needed – meaning you can get help faster, closer to home.πŸ’™

New secure medicine collection lockers have been introduced at Great Western Hospital Boots Pharmacy to make collecting prescriptions quicker and more convenient.

Eligible patients can now collect medication 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, using a secure, simple locker system at our on-site pharmacy.

The lockers are part of a wider redevelopment of the Boots Pharmacy, which has recently expanded by 50% to help improve services for patients and visitors.

✨ A special moment at Great Western Hospital ✨

We were delighted to welcome artist Levon Biss to the Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, as we celebrated the installation of his striking photography on our first floor by Cardiac Services.

Levon has kindly donated this beautiful collection, following his own experience as a patient at GWH last year. He was treated by Dr Badrinathan Chandrasekaran, Consultant Cardiologist, and this act of generosity is a heartfelt way of giving back to the team who cared for him πŸ’™

During the visit, Levon was joined by Dr Chandrasekaran and Chris Bull, Deputy Chief Nurse, alongside members of the local media, to mark the occasion together.

His work, taken from The Hidden Beauty of Seeds and Fruits, reveals the extraordinary detail of the natural world β€” reminding us of the powerful connection between nature and medicine.

These artworks are already making a difference β€” helping to create a more welcoming, uplifting environment for patients, visitors and staff.

A huge thank you to Levon for his generosity and for sharing his incredible work with our hospital community.
