A rare book of beautiful hand-painted Gower landscapes has gone on display in Swansea 🎨
🖌️ Mary Wood painted Sketches in Gower in the mid-1800s - a book of 27 illuminated paintings depicting the Gower Peninsula, kept within her family ever since and rarely seen by anyone outside it.
📜 The book is a rare example of Missal Painting - a Victorian revival of medieval manuscript illumination that was hugely popular with amateur painters, particularly women, in the 1850s and 60s. Each page combines intricate decorative borders with hand-painted scenes in the style of a medieval illuminated manuscript.
🏛️ The family has now donated the book to Swansea Museum, where it will be on permanent display for the public to enjoy for generations to come.
📍 Find it on the ground floor of Swansea Museum - through the entrance, down the steps, turn left. Open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 4:30pm. Free entry.
