Just one hour of exposure to everyday air pollution can impact both lung function and brain performance, new UK research shows.

In a controlled study, 15 healthy volunteers were exposed to common pollutants: clean air, diesel exhaust, woodsmoke, cooking emissions, and limonene SOA – a citrus-based compound often found in cleaning products.

Among the key findings were that lung function declined after just 60 minutes of exposure and Limonene had the greatest impact, followed by woodsmoke, diesel exhaust, and cooking emissions.

Researchers also found effects across key areas of cognitive performance, including memory, attention, motor control and socio-emotional processing.

Dr Thomas Faherty (University of Birmingham) said the findings add to growing evidence that short-term exposure can affect both brain and lung function within hours — and that the type of pollution matters, not just the amount.
