Volunteersโ€™ Week Spotlight: Meet Mathew McMahon ๐Ÿ‘‹

Mathew has been volunteering with us for an incredible 10 years, proudly earning his long service badge this year! He first supported the endoscopy ward and porters before moving to the Treatment Centre, where he now meets and greets patients and helps those who need extra support getting around.

He loves meeting people from all walks of life and being part of a positive, welcoming team. Volunteering has been good for him too, it gives him a real sense of purpose.

Mathew says: โ€œIโ€™ve had so many family members coming in and out of hospital โ€“ what better way to help out and give back than volunteering?โ€

And his advice for anyone thinking about volunteering? โ€œBe yourself, be confident and enjoy the social side. We go on trips together every year.โ€

Thank you, Mathew, for everything you do to support our patients and staff. ๐Ÿ’–

Volunteersโ€™ Week Spotlight: Meet Sue Dorricott, Volunteer Chaplain ๐Ÿ‘‹

Sue has been bringing comfort, connection, and compassion to patients as a volunteer chaplain for the last 10 years. She loves supporting people in her own community and says the best part of volunteering is seeing someone โ€œcome to life after a chatโ€. Simply listening, sharing a moment, or helping someone feel grounded can make a world of difference.

Her message to anyone thinking about volunteering is: โ€œLaunch yourself into it. The more you do, the stronger and more confident you become. So, if you want to enhance your life, or if youโ€™re lonely or on your own, go there and you'll make so many connections. I always go home after a shift feeling happier. Itโ€™s so good for you mentally to do something for somebody else. So, if youโ€™re thinking of volunteering, just do it. You might be just the person that someone needs on the ward that day.โ€

Thank you, Sue, for the kindness, humility and joy you bring to our wards every week ๐Ÿ’–

In celebration of International Clinical Trials Day 2026 last week, our brilliant research and innovation colleagues at Good Hope Hospital hosted their annual research showcase ๐ŸŽ‰

This yearโ€™s event took a roving approach, with teams visiting wards and departments throughout the day alongside a showcase stand outside X-ray, bringing research and innovation directly to colleagues, patients and visitors.

There was a great atmosphere across the hospital as people came together to learn more about the incredible research taking place at Good Hope and the difference it is making for patients.

The event was made even more special as it coincided with the 20th anniversary of the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR).

A huge thank you to everyone who took part and helped make the event such a success!

โ€œYouโ€™ll live a million lives in your lifetime because of the connections you have with your patients.โ€

Dr Pablo Garcia de Paso is a Consultant Physician in General Internal Medicine (GIM) at Good Hope Hospital.

Originally from Zaragoza in Spain, Dr Garcia de Paso completed his medical training in general internal medicine and acute medicine before building a career across the Midlands, including Oxford, Warwick and Worcester. He joined UHB in January 2026 and has spent the past 13 years working in the NHS.

In our latest โ€˜We are UHBโ€™ blog, Dr Garcia de Paso shares his deeply personal reflections on medicine, leadership and humanity. He highlights the vital role generalist physicians play in caring for complex patients and reflects on how mentoring the next generation of doctors has become one of the most rewarding parts of his career. He also speaks candidly about empathy, decisionโ€‘making, wellbeing, and finding restoration beyond medicine โ€“ from teaching and mentoring to Comic Con and board games.

If you need medical help over the long weekend, using the right service can save you time and ensure you get the best care. Hereโ€™s how to stay well and get support if you need it:

โœ… Visit your local pharmacy โ€“ Many are open all weekend and can help with minor illnesses like coughs, colds, sore throats, UTIs, sinus infections, and skin conditions. Check which pharmacies are open near you via the link in the comments.
โœ… Use NHS 111 โ€“ Available 24/7 online or by phone for urgent advice, and to be directed to the right service, including urgent treatment centres and out-of-hours GPs.
โœ… Only use A&E for life-threatening emergencies.

Today is World Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Day, which is held annually on 19 May to unite the global community and raise awareness of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

The day is championed by Crohn's & Colitis UK, which represents over 500,000 people living with these lifelong, invisible conditions. Each year, 25,000 more people are diagnosed across the UK.

Here at Good Hope Hospital, our IBD nurse specialists have been raising awareness and signposting to useful sources of support.

Congratulations to our Medical Assessment Unit (MAU) construction partners McAvoy who recently won an award for the project. ๐Ÿ†

The Modern Methods of Construction Awards 2026 took place earlier this month in Birmingham.

Our MAU, which was officially opened last September, scooped the top award in the category 'Project of the Year โ€“ Healthcare (Primary Care)'. The judges commended "the sustainability outcomes and coordination with the hospital throughout the build."

It's fantastic that our patients are benefitting from this award-winning building. โ™ฅ๏ธ

Congratulations to all involved. โญ
