Congratulations to the Good Hope Hospital Critical Care Team, who are leading the way with a range practical sustainability initiatives designed to reduce waste, save money and improve service efficiency 💚

The work has been driven by a dedicated sustainability working group, which introduced a pilot ‘green bed space’ to test new ideas.

Successful initiatives have resulted in the team reducing unnecessary disposable glove use where it is not clinically required, reducing plastic waste for delivery of medication and avoiding unnecessary blood tests, proving that small changes can make a huge difference for patients, colleagues and the environment🌎

The group is continuing to explore new ideas and embed further improvements. Well done team critical care 👏

If you need medical help over the long weekend, using the right service can save you time and ensure you get the best care. Here’s how to stay well and get support if you need it:

✅ Visit your local pharmacy – Many are open all weekend and can help with minor illnesses like coughs, colds, sore throats, UTIs, sinus infections, and skin conditions. Check which pharmacies are open near you via the link in the comments below.
✅ Use NHS 111 – Available 24/7 online or by phone for urgent advice, and to be directed to the right service, including urgent treatment centres and out-of-hours GPs.
✅ Only use A&E for life-threatening emergencies.

Our new research facility at Good Hope Hospital is now open!

Located on the former CU27 ward, the facility provides dedicated space for interventional research, giving more of our patients the opportunity to take part in clinical trials.

This week, we welcomed our first patient - 95-year-old Joan, pictured here with her daughter Carol and the research team. Joan is taking part in a new stroke study led by Consultant Dr Yadava, exploring the effects of two drugs on cognition following stroke.

For Joan, the new facility has made taking part possible, as she wouldn’t have been able to travel further afield to access the study.

Our research team is looking forward to welcoming many more patients and creating new opportunities to take part in clinical research 👏

Two years of the Generation Study at Good Hope Hospital - and an important milestone reached 🧬

Since the study launched at UHB in 2024, we’ve recruited more than 2,500 participants, with over 2,100 babies’ blood samples sent for genome sequencing.

Running across Good Hope Hospital, Heartlands Hospital and Solihull Hospital, teams at all three sites are working together to deliver the study.

A big thank you to all our colleagues, participants and families who have helped us reach this milestone and contribute to this important research.

A major step forward for urgent and emergency care at Good Hope Hospital has been approved.

Birmingham City Council has given the go ahead for construction of a new state-of-the-art Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC), which will be co-located with the hospital’s Emergency Department (ED), bringing urgent and emergency care services together under one roof for the first time.

Supported by £8.568 million in NHS England capital funding, the development will create a modern, purpose-built front door for the hospital, helping patients access the right care, in the right place, at the right time. By streamlining patient pathways, the new facility will improve the quality, safety and timeliness of care while reducing delays.

Simon Jarvis, Executive Director at Good Hope Hospital, said: “We were awarded £8.568 million in capital funding from NHS England at the end of 2025, so we are delighted to get the go ahead from Birmingham City Council to begin the work.

“The UTC investment forms a key part of our hospital strategy plans for the next five years. The new building will provide space to bring urgent treatment for minor injuries and illness together with more specialist emergency care, helping ensure patients are seen by the right clinician, in the right place, at the right time.”

We are strongly urging people to take care of themselves and others in the upcoming heat conditions.

The vulnerable and those who are at-risk are more likely to suffer in the heat and could become seriously ill with health complications. However, in these conditions anyone could be at risk. Please take care of yourself.

Whilst we want everyone to enjoy this warm weather it is important that we all take simple steps to help us stay healthy at this time. It is easy to become dehydrated in hot weather as we can soon lose more fluid than we take in, and even people at the peak of physical fitness can become ill if they are not careful.

Drink cold non-alcoholic drinks regularly, keep out of the sun during the hottest times of the day between 11am – 3pm, and avoid physical exertion in the heat where possible.

People who are elderly, the very young and those with chronic conditions are more at risk, so please check on vulnerable friends and neighbours every day during the heatwave.

More than 100 patients have now benefited from an advanced pacemaker technique at Good Hope Hospital that helps the heart beat more naturally.

Over the past two years, the pacing laboratory team has carried out more than 100 conduction system pacing procedures. The technique works with the heart’s natural electrical system and can help the heart pump more efficiently than traditional pacing.

Research suggests that helping the heart beat in a way that is closer to its natural rhythm may reduce the risk of heart failure for some patients.

One of those patients is Keith Chambers, who first received care at Good Hope Hospital more than 50 years ago and had his conduction system pacing procedure in 2025.

Keith said: “The team worked extremely hard. I couldn’t have been better looked after. I couldn’t have had better treatment.”

The service is supported by a weekly multidisciplinary team meeting, helping staff identify and discuss patients who may benefit from the procedure.

The team is also contributing to international research exploring how conduction system pacing could help prevent heart failure and improve long-term outcomes for patients.
