Roker Pier & Lighthouse

Roker Pier & Lighthouse Sunderland's iconic Roker Pier & Lighthouse.

Following sympathetic restoration the grade 2 listed lighthouse and pier tunnel, they are are now open for public tours for the first time in its history. For more than a century Roker Pier and Lighthouse has been a prominent feature of Sunderland’s coastline, but a century of storms and buffeting waves have taken their toll on this Victorian superstructure. After a period of restoration, funded b

y Sunderland City Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund, work is in progress to improve public access and interpretation to the site, including opening the 600m long pier tunnel. A much loved local landmark and symbol of Sunderland’s industrial and maritime prowess, the pier has stood testimony to many of the events which have shaped Sunderland over the past 100 years. The restoration work that the Council is undertaking will ensure that it remains for the enjoyment of generations of Sunderland’s future residents.
