This was Reform's chance to prove us all wrong. It was their chance to show that these racist and misogynistic comments were only the views of a single individual who had somehow slipped through the net, rather than a reflection of their entire party.

Instead, Reform Sunderland has made its position clear - that they happily support racism, and see no problem in promoting the idea that women are inherently inferior to men.

More than that, it sends a message that such attitudes are compatible with the values of the Reform party as a whole. This only contributes to public perception that Reform supporters endorse racism and misogyny, a perception that many Reform supporters find upsetting, and have put a great deal of time and energy into challenging

This decision comes not long after the same council made fanfare of taking down the Pride flag from City Hall during Pride month. This is a Council with a clear message to its voters and to the rest of the country: if you aren't a straight white male, Sunderland is no longer welcoming to you.

We encourage you to complain to Sunderland Council about this decision using the complaints procedure outlined here -> www.sunderland.gov.uk/article/13767/How-do-I-complain-about-a-Councillor

Reform UK Sunderland councillor reinstated after apology for alleged comments about Nigerians in the city

Glen Gibbins was suspended by Reform for misogynistic and racist comments he made stating that ‘Nigerians should be melted down and used to fill in pot holes’ and that women should ‘stick to cooking, sewing and homemaking’.

The suspension was confirmed by Chris Eynon, the Reform leader of Sunderland Council.

Yesterday the Sunderland City Council website was updated to include Gibbins as not only a councillor, but a Reform Councillior.

No statement has been made by Reform over whether this means the suspension has been lifted.

If they have decided to continue supporting Mr Gibbins, we encourage Reform Sunderland to make a clear statement defending their decision to promote racism and misogyny within their party.

If this change is simply a mistake, we urge Reform to clarify.

We also call on Mr Gibbins to make a clear (and long overdue) apology for his comments and step down as a councillor.

This should never have been allowed to happen at all. These comments were not a secret. Until a month ago they were clearly avaliable on his public page for everyone to see. They had been reported by ourselves and multiple other news outlets well before the election date, and Reform did nothing and hoped we would forget.

We have not forgotten, and we will continue holding Reform to account.

Join the Green Party today to take the fight straight to Reform and build a better, more hopeful future for everyone. -> join.greenparty.org.uk
