🌱Spring is in the air… and that means it’s almost nesting season! 🐣

We’re excited to launch the fourth year of the Ringed Plover Nesting Project on Jackies Beach, Whitburn.

Ringed Plovers nest right on the beach, and their incredible camouflage means eggs and chicks are at risk of being accidentally trampled. Our project helps protect them through fencing, signage, and positive engagement with beach users — but none of this would be possible without our amazing volunteers. 👏

We’re now looking for more people to join our volunteer team and help give these special birds the best chance to successfully fledge.

Snack time 🦀

Spotted at the mouth of the Tyne on a blustery day, this beautiful Eider was tossing its crab like a pro chef!

Eiders have a quirky technique: they fling their crustacean snacks around to remove their legs before gulping down the whole crunchy body in one go—Nature’s table manners at their finest!

Puffer jacket ❌ Puffing ✅!

Unlike us, Ringed plovers can’t throw on a coat when it’s chilly! Instead, they puff up their feathers to trap insulating layers of air and stay warm in the winter cold, often crouching low to keep their legs and feet covered.

They also build up extra fat reserves — a vital energy buffer during freezing, windy weather when they’re unable to forage enough food.

❄Winter days call for extra fluff!❄

Keep nature in mind as you celebrate this festive season! Skip balloon releases to protect wildlife🎈🚫

All balloons that go up will come back down, endangering wildlife from land to sea.

What else can you do:
- Bubble Blowing 🫧
- Writing messages in the sand ✒️
- Flying a kite 🪁

Help us help our wildlife to not only survive but thrive! ✨🙌

Is that a bird? Is that a plane? Is that a seagull?
Nope — it’s a black-headed gull!

Fun fact: there’s actually no such thing as a “seagull”! Instead, we have a variety of gull species that call our coastlines home, either year-round or as seasonal visitors.

As we head into the colder months, the black-headed gull sheds its summer plumage — losing the dark head and sporting a winter look with just a small black spot behind the eye. Midway through the change, like this little dude, it looks like they’re wearing headphones!🎧

Hope you’re all catching some of that golden early evening light like this gull is!☀️❄
