The Government has today unexpectedly announced that Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) is being paused and reviewed, including proposals affecting Gloucestershire, and therefore Stroud District Council.

Councils in Gloucestershire are seeking further information in addition to the Secretary of State's announcement to the House of Commons made today.

The Government says the review will ensure the reorganisation process is robust, complies with legal requirements, and aligns with its wider plans for devolution and local government reform.

At this stage, we do not have further details on the implications for Gloucestershire or the timescales for completing the review.

🌸 Who said a little colour can't change a whole village? 🌸

Georgia and Rebecca from SDC recently took a stroll around Painswick with Environment Committee Chair Martin Pearcy, admiring a blooming brilliant community project that's bringing colour, wildlife and people together.

What started as a simple idea from local children, who said they'd love to see more colour in the village, has blossomed into a vibrant community effort supported by a Stroud District Council Climate and Nature Grant. Working together, Painswick Parish Council, local organisations, volunteers and businesses have filled the village with beautiful hanging baskets and planters bursting with pollinator-friendly plants.

The displays aren't just pretty to look at. Lavender, rosemary, sage, thyme, salvia and many more nectar-rich plants are helping provide valuable food sources for bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects. Sustainability has been at the heart of the project too, with recycled materials, water-retaining planting techniques and locally sourced growing media helping the displays thrive, even through this year's dry weather.

Perhaps the most wonderful part of the project is the number of people who've rolled up their sleeves to make it happen. From Painswick Gardening Club and local community groups to businesses and volunteers helping with watering duties, it's been a real village effort. And best of all, children from The Croft Primary School haven't just seen their idea come to life, they've been getting involved by learning how to grow plants from seed themselves.

A huge thank you to everyone who has helped turn a simple request for more colour into something that benefits both people and nature. We're sure the bees are giving it two wings up 🐝🌼

We'll be sharing more Climate and Nature Grant recipients over the coming weeks, so keep an eye out for more inspiring projects helping communities and nature flourish across the district.

🎬 Ever wondered how you'd fit a castle, brewery, golf course, canal-side café, stunning countryside, independent shops and delicious local food into one weekend?

Our new tourism film is here to help! 🌿☕🏰🚶‍♀️

The upbeat film celebrates everything that makes Stroud district such a special place to visit, from outdoor adventures and beautiful landscapes to vibrant market towns, great food and hidden gems waiting to be discovered.

Filmed over five days in June, the production visited 31 locations across the district and features a fantastic mix of local businesses and attractions, including Berkeley Castle, Brimscombe Mill, Minchinhampton Common, Williams, Nailsworth, Stroud Brewery & Taproom, Stinchcombe Hill Golf Club and Old Spot Inn in Dursley.

To capture the sheer variety of experiences on offer, we really put our actors through their paces. They ate and drank their way across the district, paddle boarded and paddled a canoe, played golf and tennis, cycled, climbed and even chucked some wooden blocks around 🙃

It's not all action-packed adventures, though. We also sent them for a spa visit and massage, on peaceful walks across the common, bird watching, shopping and to plenty of beautiful spots where they could simply sit and enjoy a good book.

And that's exactly the message we wanted to share: whatever your idea of the perfect day out, weekend break or mini adventure, you'll find it in the Stroud district 💚

While the campaign is designed to attract more visitors and support local businesses, it's just as useful for those of us who already live here. Whether you're looking for your next family day out, a relaxing walk, somewhere new to eat, or inspiration for a weekend adventure, there's plenty to discover right on your doorstep.

It also supports sustainable tourism, with a shorter version of the film now being shown at rail stations along the GWR Stonehouse to London route, encouraging visitors to explore the district by train.

🌳 Road closure on Stratford Road for essential tree works

A short section of Stratford Road will be closed from 7am to 6pm on Saturday 5 September and Sunday 6 September, between the Tesco roundabout and the Stratford Park entrance roundabout.

The closure has been scheduled at the weekend to minimise disruption and is needed so specialist contractors can safely carry out essential maintenance and inspections on trees that overhang the road.

🌲 Stratford Park is home to more than 800 trees, including some of the district's most significant mature specimens. Regular inspections and maintenance are vital to protect these trees, ensure they remain healthy for future generations and keep park visitors and road users safe.

🚗 During the closure, access to Stratford Park, Active Lifestyles Stroud (including the Lido 💦) and The Museum in the Park will be available from the Paganhill direction only.

Please allow extra time for your journey and follow signed diversions.
