Heavens Valley Action Group All this made possible by amazing level of community support.

Thrupp Farm, including the much-loved Heavens Valley, is now fully owned by the community, thanks to a major grant that enabled repayment of loans that part-funded the purchase of the land.

A journey from Selsley Long Barrow to the waterfall in the Heavens is the subject of a short film being shown tomorrow night (Thursday) at the Crown & Sceptre.
This is the latest screening of the film ‘Long Barrow to Cuda Falls’, featuring the poetry of local poet Al Hughes, edited by Joe Pedder and with an original soundtrack by Gavin McClafferty and Simon Edwards.
Featuring nature-based practices, folklore and animist perspectives, the film is described as meditating on our place here, our island existence and the changing times we’re living through.
It starts at 7 for 7.30pm.

Please take heed of the fire fighters' warning that the small amount of rain we've had over recent days has not been enough to prevent fire from spreading. We appreciate visitors continuing to take care to keep our valley safe.

🔥 Thinking about firing up a BBQ this Bank Holiday?

While we've seen some rain recently, the ground and vegetation can still dry out quickly and fires can spread faster than you might think.

Disposable BBQs, campfires and discarded ci******es can easily start fires that put wildlife, property and people at risk.

Why not enjoy a picnic instead? 🧺

✅ Take your litter home
✅ Never leave glass behind
✅ Avoid disposable BBQs on grassland
✅ Call 999 if you spot a fire

Let's keep Gloucestershire's countryside safe this Bank Holiday weekend.

EDIT: EVENT POSTPONED, please contact the organisers for updates:

If you missed out on a place on our recent scything course, here’s another chance to learn this ancient rural skill.
This course is run by Stroud Valleys Project, not us. It's this Friday and there are still a couple of places available at time of posting this.

Good to see the government taking fire risks seriously. We hope the very small minority of visitors to the valley who have disregarded the risks, despite our signs warning of the dangers, will pay attention.

Blimey did you hear that just now 🤣

Millions of people across England and Wales are receiving an emergency alert on their phones, warning against lighting anything that could spark a wildfire, including barbecues, campfires, and fireworks, the Cabinet Office said.

It comes as Andy Burnham has called in the military, announced a ban on disposable barbecues and warned smokers not to risk setting light to “tinderbox” Britain as he scrambled to respond to the summer heatwave and wildfires.

The Prime Minister also revealed he planned to commission firefighting planes, as used to douse flames in Europe and the US, to combat the spread of wildfires.

Do join us tomorrow in the pub (6.30 to 8pm) for an informal chat to find out whether you might like to be one of our new directors 😊

The Heavens Valley needs you…

The future of the Heavens Valley Community Benefit Society depends on people willing to share their time, skills and enthusiasm. If you’d like to help shape this remarkable community-owned landscape, we’d love to hear from you.

We’re looking to appoint several new volunteer directors and are particularly interested in people with experience in:
* Income generation and fundraising
* Resource and asset management
* Communications and marketing

Being a director is an active and rewarding role. Our Board works closely together to make decisions, develop projects and turn ideas into reality, so we’re looking for people who are ready to make a real contribution.

If you’re interested, please send a short CV and covering letter to [email protected]. If you’d like an informal chat first, please get in touch.

Applications close August 14. Candidates will initially meet with current directors before being presented to shareholders for election through an online vote.

Not ready to become a director? We’re always looking for volunteers to join our friendly working groups, whether that’s out on the land or behind the scenes. To find out more, email [email protected].

Please share this post with anyone who might be interested.💚

Several residents reported seeing a group of children lighting a campfire in a field today. They were visited by volunteers, who explained the damage that fire can cause when the grass is so dry. The youngsters seemed unaware of the risks, and didn’t realise there is a temporary ban on fires.
We put the fire out and asked them not to light another.

Meanwhile, some of the ‘no fires’ signs at entrances have again been torn down; we will be replacing them asap.

The incident came as a resident reported having found broken glass elsewhere in the valley. This is not believed to be related to the fire but it does show the sort of dangers that we all need to be alert to.

We have a team of volunteers called Walking Guardians who keep an eye out for this kind of problem while on their regular walks in the valley. They have their own WhatsApp group so they can quickly alert the whole team to any problems and coordinate action. If you’d like to join them, please register here, selecting ‘Walking Guardians’ in the drop-down box (there are lots of other tasks you can volunteer for too):

Thank you all for keeping the valley safe from fire so far, and not letting this happen here. ❤️‍🔥
