At this time of year, there's often a rise in gastrointestinal infections such as cryptosporidium and E. coli, associated with visits to farms and country parks.

These infections can lead to symptoms like diarrhoea and stomach cramps, and in more serious cases may result in significant illness. Infection usually occurs through contact with animals in petting or feeding areas, or by touching animal droppings or contaminated surfaces near where animals are kept. Harmful bacteria can easily be transferred to your mouth if you touch your face or put your fingers in your mouth before washing your hands thoroughly.

If you’re planning a visit to a farm or country park, please remember the importance of washing your hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water, especially before eating and after removing dirty footwear, to help prevent infections that could make you seriously unwell. Those who are immunocompromised or pregnant should consider avoiding such visits.

At this time of year, we typically see an increase in several gastro-intestinal infections such as cryptosporidium and E.coli, associated with activities such as visits to farms and country parks. These infections can cause diarrhoea and stomach pains, and in serious cases can lead to severe illness.
People mainly get infected by touching animals in petting and feeding areas, or through contact with animal droppings or contaminated surfaces in the surrounding area to where animals are kept. These harmful bacteria can get accidentally passed to your mouth, by putting hands on faces, or fingers in mouths, before they are thoroughly washed.
If you are planning to visit a farm or country park soon, please remember the importance of thoroughly and frequently washing hands with soap and water – especially before eating and after removing dirty shoes – to avoid getting bugs that could make you seriously ill.

Pub Lotteries

The Gambling Commission has received an increase in the number of enquiries relating to pubs and the way they have organised lotteries and raffles. Whilst their lotteries toolkit (Link Below) provides comprehensive advice, the following is particularly relevant.

β€œA customer lottery or raffle cannot make a profit so is not suitable for fundraising. All of the money collected through ticket sales must be used to pay for the prizes and any expenses incurred organising the lottery.
A customer lottery can only be run by a business for its customers at the time they are on the business premises.
Tickets must not be sold to children under 16 years of age.
No prize can be more than Β£50 in value.
No rollover of prizes from one lottery to another is permitted.
Only one lottery draw is permitted in each period of seven days.
Tickets must show the name and address of the organiser, the ticket price, any restrictions as to who may or may not buy a ticket, and state that the rights created by the ticket are non-transferable.”

If you wish to fundraise for a good cause and sell tickets prior to an event you must apply for a small society lotteries licence:
