At this time of year, there's often a rise in gastrointestinal infections such as cryptosporidium and E. coli, associated with visits to farms and country parks.
These infections can lead to symptoms like diarrhoea and stomach cramps, and in more serious cases may result in significant illness. Infection usually occurs through contact with animals in petting or feeding areas, or by touching animal droppings or contaminated surfaces near where animals are kept. Harmful bacteria can easily be transferred to your mouth if you touch your face or put your fingers in your mouth before washing your hands thoroughly.
If youβre planning a visit to a farm or country park, please remember the importance of washing your hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water, especially before eating and after removing dirty footwear, to help prevent infections that could make you seriously unwell. Those who are immunocompromised or pregnant should consider avoiding such visits.
