Last night I attended a veterinary medicine workshop hosted by Cambridge University about how to diagnose an issue with different types of animals.

At each phase of my application, I’m getting more excited, and a step closer to my planned vocation of working in Africa helping to conserve wild animals.

This week I’ve signed up for a few days of veterinary medicine teaching at St. Catherine’s College, Cambridge in April. Where I’ll be able to experience first hand the experience of living and learning the Vet Med course I’m applying for. Excited!

Following my weeks work experience at Stow Vets, they have offered me a Saturday job! Assisting the nurses to help continue my veterinary experience ahead of applying to Cambridge.

A wonderful opportunity that will hopefully show Cambridge just how dedicated I am to joining this profession, when it comes to my interview.

Thanks to everyone at Stow Veterinary Surgeons for this opportunity.

So far this summer I’ve spent a few days with Ben Brain taking a look at how veterinary medicine can improve the ability of race horses at his centre in Bourton on the water.

Then a week with Dyson Farming, working with both their flocks and herds, looking at preventative medicine to improve the quality of their meat.

And finally, a week of clinical experience with Stow Vets. Experiencing first hand animal surgery, improving the life of animals.

I want to thank everyone who is supporting me in my journey in veterinary medicine.

I know it sounds like a long way off, but one year today and I’ll be making my way back to London following two and a half weeks in Kruger, volunteering as a vet with ProVet in Hoerdspruit, a great opportunity to further extend my opportunity to study veterinary medicine at Cambridge. I’m almost bursting!

World renown wildlife vet, Dr Peter Rogers

My time spent volunteering at the Kruger National Park, will see me work alongside the world renown wildlife vet, Dr Peter Rogers at the Provet Wildlife Services and Animal Hospital.

Dr Rogers clinic is based in Hoedspruit, where he helps to care for and rehabilitate the local wildlife. He also makes frequent visits into the Kruger National park to care for wildlife directly in need of immediate care.

My outward journey will see me leaving London for Johannesburg on Monday 5th August 2024, landing on the 6th, with an internal flight to the Kruger National Park on the same day.

Hello, my name is Caitlin, and for as long as I can remember I've wanted to be a wildlife vet in Africa, helping to look after endangered animals and helping to conserve these wonderful animals for future generations to admire and enjoy.

I'm about to start studying for my A-Levels ahead of applying to Cambridge University to study veterinary medicine. But, in order to have a good chance of being accepted, I need to have shown both clinical and non-clinical veterinary experience in an area that I want to study that also reflects my preferred vocation.

Several local vet centers have promised help with experience, but visiting South Africa and experiencing wildlife veterinary firsthand, I believe will truly give me the advantage that I need to study at Cambridge, bringing me closer to my lifelong dream of becoming a veterinarian assisting endangered animals in Africa.

I've started the process of visiting South Africa in August 2024 through a company called, African Conservation Experience, looking at volunteering for two weeks at Shimongwe in the Kruger National Park.

Please visit my ‘fundmytravel’ page to read more and donate to help this dream come true. Thank you. Caitlin
