Eat Safe Award for Uig Primary School, Isle of Lewis

Cllr Dr Frances Murray, Chair of the Community Safety Board, presented Uig Primary School with an Eat Safe Award during a visit to the school.

The Food Standards Scotland Eat Safe Award was presented to school cooks, Fiona Callan and Susan Springer and Head Teacher Ann Marie Beaton. (Pictured)

The Eat Safe Award is granted by the Environmental Health Service of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar in conjunction with Food Standards Scotland. The award is available to all establishments selling food directly to consumers.

The main aim of the scheme is to provide an incentive to food businesses to strive for food hygiene and food safety management standards beyond those required by law. It also helps consumers make informed choices about where to eat out by providing a recognisable sign of excellence in standards of food hygiene.

Cllr Dr Frances Murray, Chair of the Community Safety Board was delighted to hand over the award on behalf of the Comhairle. Cllr Murray said:
"The Eat Safe award is only presented to businesses that have achieved hygiene standards beyond those required by law, so their commitment has to be commended. I would encourage all businesses within the Outer Hebrides to aim for this award as it provides them with a valuable tool to reassure their customers of a continuing commitment to produce food safely."

Eligible establishments are assessed for the award as part of scheduled food hygiene inspections undertaken by officers from Environmental Health. Further details on the scheme are available on the Food Standards Scotland website, link in the comments section below.

Viral Online Trend Causing Severe Burns to Children

A new trend has emerged suggesting that children and young people should microwave squishy silicone toys. After seeing online videos claiming this makes the toys softer and more pliable, when squeezed afterwards it results in severe burns.

We’re encouraging parents, carers, and staff to be aware of this trend and talk to young people about the risks of following "trends" seen online.

Don't search and push the algorithms. Read the information and guidance you need in the Safer Schools App and on our website.

Spotted blue-green algae?

Warm weather can increase the risk of blue‑green algae (cyanobacteria) appearing in lochs and reservoirs.

These algae can be harmful to people and animals through swallowing or prolonged contact with affected water. If you notice discoloured water, surface scums or algal growths, please report it using the Bloomin’ Algae app: brc.ac.uk/app/bloomin-algae

***ANIMAL FEED REGISTRATION***
ADVICE FOR NEW CROFTERS

Are you involved in the use of Animal Feed here in the Western Isles?

Then we want to help ensure you get off on the right track to having a successful venture.

One of the first and most important steps is to register with Food Standards Scotland (FSS) as a Feed Business Operator (FEBO). The type of registration required will depend on the activities you carry out.

âś… Registration is a legal requirement
âś… It is free and straightforward to complete
âś… It places you within the regulated UK feed and food chain

You can find further information and register here ⬇️

https://www.foodstandards.gov.scot/business-guidance/industry-specific-advice/animal-feed

In many cases, FEBO registration is also a requirement for joining Quality Assurance or Membership Schemes that feed businesses may choose to participate in.

Please see our website for further information about our Animal Feed role and also how to register with FSS.

* Please note: Registration applies to feed for food-producing animals only (Not pets).

CnES Trading Standards - Consumer Alert
*** GUTTER CLEANING SERVICES - DOOR to DOOR ***

We have had recent reports of Cold Callers going door to door across Lewis touting for work offering to clean gutters at people's homes. As well as some receiving mail shots.

Trading Standards advice to our residents is not to enage with doorstep traders offering goods and services. As very often high pressure sales techniques are used, costs increase during the job, very poor service is received, damage occurs to properties and no meaningful guarantee exists.

It is widely reported that snooping of properties may also occur by cold callers which can lead to further issues.

They may have smart uniforms, professional looking paperwork, and even livered vehicles that can help to gain a person's trust.

This issue is currently being investigated and our advice is just say no to cold callers or simply don’t open the door if that’s possible.

If you do want a specific job done at your home please do some research and take your time to weigh up the best options.

For more information about doorstep crime, how to report it and for 'No Cold Calling Stickers' for your home please see this link:

***SCAM TEXT MESSAGES - Consumer Alert***

Trading standards are warning islanders to be aware of text messages being sent from scammers.

The example shown has been recently sent to an islander and looked quite convincing but fortunately a whatspp message check with the family member to their original phone number confirmed it was not sent from them.

Scammers often try claim to be someone you know or trust including family or friends and then will try to take money from you.

You can find information on how to protect yourself from scams and also how to report them on our webpage

Aroha was established in 2024 to provide immediate, local care for seal pups. A small volunteer team, including trained BDMLR medics, now offers temporary shelter, intensive care and stabilization (often meaning around-the-clock support) for pups directly on the Outer Hebrides. During the busy grey seal and harbor seal pupping seasons, rescued pups typically stay at the sanctuary for one to five days, until they are strong enough to be transferred to a long term rehabilitation facility.

In addition to emergency care, Aroha provides educational talks for the local community. As a registered charity, the sanctuary aims to expand its facilities – including building pool space – so that straightforward rehabilitation cases can remain on the Western Isles for their full recovery, avoiding the need for transport to the mainland.

Aroha can be contacted on [email protected]

Aroha are currently supporting the Seal Alliance with their Flying Ring Campaign. To find out more see the link in the comments sections below ⬇️
