Western Isles Libraries Marks Libraries Change Lives Week alongside Volunteers’ Week 2026
From Monday 1 to Saturday 6 June 2026, Western Isles Libraries will celebrate both Libraries Change Lives Week and Volunteers’ Week.
Western Isles Libraries is bringing together two national campaigns to encourage the community to get involved in their local library - whether it’s to join (or re-join) as a member or give a little more time and become a library volunteer.
Libraries Change Lives Week shines a spotlight on how libraries empower individuals and communities through access to welcoming spaces, social interaction, books, and learning opportunities. Volunteers’ Week celebrates everyone who gives their time, skills and passion to support services across the UK.
Throughout the week, Western Isles Libraries will be highlighting current volunteering opportunities and staff will be available to discuss how you can get involved. Some of the opportunities include:
• Joining a Working Bee to tidy Lionacleit community garden ready for planting
• Storytelling for children – especially in Gaelic (Tarbert or Castlebay)
• Digitising some of our incredible Local History collection (Stornoway)
• Helping to deliver books to housebound borrowers (All branches)
• Share your family or local history knowledge with keen adults (All branches)
• Becoming a Friend of the Library to provide ongoing support and coordinate library book sales (All branches)
If you are inspired by Libraries Change Lives Week and would like to volunteer, Western Isles Libraries would love to hear from you. Drop into your local library, fill in the online form on our website https://www.wilibraries.org.uk/whats-on or contact [email protected] to find out more.
