Stonehaven Flood Action Group

Stonehaven Flood Action Group In November 2009 and again in December 2012, Stonehaven was badly affected by flooding. The Stonehave Alert = Flooding is possible - Be prepared. Help!

The community spirit & resilience of Stonehaven as a whole has to be seen to be believed. This resilience however has been tested to the limits and after enduring both coastal and river flooding at the end of 2012, it is time to start asking why this is happening. The Flood Action Group meet regularly and are working closely with Aberdeenshire Council, SEPA and the Scottish Flood Forum. We wish to

act as a critical voice to the Council's response to make sure that all possibilities for action are explored, provide an open resource of local knowledge and to keep communications open so that everyone is informed of progress. Stonehaven Flood Action Group does not issue independent flood alerts or warnings. Anyone wishing to be kept updated on Flooding in Scotland should sign up for Flood Alerts/Warnings from SEPA - http://floodline.sepa.org.uk/floodingsignup/

Where appropriate, if we have any additional information of local interest from our contacts at authorised sources (SEPA, Aberdeenshire Council etc.), we will pass this on via our page. Stonehaven Flood Action Group is not responsible for any damages resulting from action taken by persons reading this page or our website. Important Points of Note:
1) Many of the flood alerts issued for Aberdeenshire are not specific to Stonehaven - to avoid unnecessary panic, always check the details of the flood alert on www.sepa.org or by calling Floodline before deciding what action is appropriate for you and your property.
2) There is a difference between a flood ALERT and a flood WARNING. Warning = Flooding is expected. Immediate action is required. Always remain vigilant and remember, it is your own responsibility to take actions which help protect yourself and your property. Frequently Asked Questions and Quick Links:

1. Can I join your group? I want to come to a meeting!
- Of course - meetings are open to all and take place on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at Invercarron Resource Centre. Read previous minutes here to see what happens - http://stonehavenfloodaction.org/meetings.html

2. I want some sandbags!
- If there is a risk of flood, Aberdeenshire Council dispense sandbags from their depot as well as depositing pallets in vulnerable areas of town. Tel: 01224 523037. Always store sandbags indoors and away from sunshine when not in use. Both plastic and hessian sandbags disintegrate if left outside over time.

3. Can I claim some money back on flood defences I've bought?
- Sorry - this scheme is now closed and all our available funds have been distributed.

4. What about Flood Wardens - what do they do? Flood Wardens are volunteers who play a crucial role in helping the community prepare for & deal with flooding. Flood wardens provide information to local residents & business owners about flooding, including useful telephone numbers, details of resilience measures, and information on pre-emptive actions which can be taken to reduce the impact of flooding on a property. In the event of a flood warning (and if deemed appropriate) Wardens will be asked by the Council to alert everyone in their assigned Flood Zone, with the intention of giving people time to erect defences, move vehicles, and prepare for evacuation if need be. Detailed information found here - http://stonehavenfloodaction.org/floodwardens.html
We highly recommend you find out who your flood warden is if you haven't met them already. Names and corresponding areas are listed here - contact us for warden's contact details either via this page or the website. http://stonehavenfloodaction.org/zones.html ***PAGE CURRENTLY BEING UPDATED***
