'Wildflowers'
- Wildflowers are essential to a healthy ecosystem. They provide vital food and habitats for pollinators like bees and butterflies, which in turn fertilize 1/3 of the worlds food crops. Their deep root systems keep soil stable, mitigate flooding and store carbon. A short walk around Stonehaven today yielded 12 different species of wildflower today (easily!) in a range of beautiful colours and shapes.

“Leaping”
- The circular ripples on the water were caused by fish breaching the surface in the river cowie last night. The jumping or “leaping” of fish is likely due to feeding behaviour as there were many low flying insects, although fish leap for other reasons such as escaping predators or overcoming obstacles. The river cowie is known to have Atlantic salmon, sea trout and native brown trout species and they seemed in abundance last night!

'Bluebell folklore'
- Bluebells are steeped in fairy mythology, portrayed as enchanted 'fairy flowers' that are both magical and dangerous. They were often associated with mischievous spirits, where the flowers ring like bells to call fairies. Even picking bluebells was believed to bring bad luck or bad fate for disrupting the fairy beds. The bluebell and fairy season is on now at Dunnottar woods.

‘Tadpoles’
- Tadpoles are the aquatic, larval stage of amphibians like frogs and toads, characterized by gills, a tail for swimming, and a herbivorous diet that turns to carnivorous as they mature. They hatch from spawn in water, develop back legs first followed by front legs, and undergo metamorphosis over 12+ weeks into air-breathing adults.

'Creatures of the deep'
- All crabs have ten legs, two of which are developed into claws used for grasping food and fighting. They are common on the shore and in the sea with different species living in different habitats. There are several species of crab in our shoreline, but I haven't seen this one before found during very low tide amongst the seaweed.

‘Jelly ear fungus’
A type of fungi which are typically gelatinous and ear-shaped. Fungi have different textures which are determined by their species and adaptations for spore dispersal. Gelatinous fungi are specially adapted to hold moisture, appearing soft, rubbery, or gelatinous after rain (as you can see in the video clip).

Another common name for this fungus is Judas’s ear because the ‘ears’ appear mostly on elder – the tree species that Judas hanged himself on after betraying Jesus to his executioners. The legend is that the ‘ears’ which emerge from elder wood represent his tormented soul.

'Grey Wagtail'
- Spotted on the river Carron, a beautiful grey wagtail. Despite their name they are mostly a vibrant yellow colour and can be spotted near fast flowing rivers or streams. The name 'wagtail' comes from the birds almost constant tail wagging as you can see in the short video.

'Bubble & squeek' - Curlew spotted in the bay this afternoon. Beautiful.
