Surface dressing is a cost-effective preventative treatment that helps preserve the road surface and extend its service life. By carrying out this type of maintenance at the right time, we can treat a larger proportion of the highway network and help prevent more extensive deterioration in the future.
Please allow extra time for your journey and consider alternative routes where possible. While our crews will do their best to facilitate access whenever it is safe to do so, there may be occasions when residents and visitors are asked to wait briefly whilst the treatment is being applied.
We appreciate your patience and cooperation while these essential works are carried out. For the latest updates, please check local signage and follow Stoke-on-Trent Highways on Facebook. 🚧

🚧 Berwick Road – Proposed Traffic Calming Scheme 🚧

Following requests from local residents and ward councillors, a road safety assessment has been undertaken on Berwick Road. As a result, Stoke-on-Trent City Council has developed a series of proposed measures to improve road safety and accessibility along Berwick Road.

πŸ“‹ The consultation plans are now available to view below.

Key Proposed Improvements:
βœ… Installation of traffic calming features, including speed cushions along Berwick Road, to reduce vehicle speeds.
βœ… Upgrading the existing zebra crossing to a raised table zebra crossing to improve pedestrian safety and reduce vehicle speed.
βœ… Installation of a pedestrian refuge / traffic island at Milton Rd / Berwick Road junction to prevent motorists cutting the corner.
βœ… Reinstatement of shared footway - cycleway markings to encourage active travel.
βœ… Refresh road markings and associated traffic signs to improve clarity and driver awareness.

Benefits of the Scheme:
πŸ”Έ Reduces vehicle speeds along Berwick Road.
πŸ”Έ Improves crossing safety for pedestrians/school children.
πŸ”Έ Cyclists provided with a safer alternative cyclepath to use instead of the carriageway.

Next Steps:
Following the consultation:
πŸ”Ή All comments received will be carefully considered.
πŸ”Ή Amendments will be made where appropriate before the final design is completed.
πŸ”Ή Subject to the outcome of the consultation and funding approval, a construction programme will be developed and start dates will be communicated in due course.

πŸ’¬ We want to hear your views.
If you have any comments on the proposed scheme, please email [email protected]. It would be helpful if you could also include your property number within your response.

πŸ“… The consultation closes on 7th September 2026.
