📚✨ Happy Birthday to Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley! ✨📚

Born on 30 August 1797, Mary Shelley changed literary history when she wrote Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, first published in 1818. Written when she was just 18 years old, the novel is widely regarded as one of the earliest works of science fiction and continues to inspire readers, writers, filmmakers and scientists today.

The daughter of philosopher William Godwin and pioneering women's rights advocate Mary Wollstonecraft, Shelley grew up surrounded by radical ideas that helped shape her imagination and her writing.

More than 225 years after her birth, her famous question still resonates: What responsibilities come with creation and discovery? A remarkable author whose work remains as relevant as ever.

❤️ We are saddened to hear about the passing of Dolly Parton, whose warmth, generosity and dedication to helping others touched countless lives around the world.

Dolly believed that "You can never get enough books into the hands of enough children"

Through her Imagination Library, Dolly helped put books into the hands of children around the world, inspiring a lifelong love of reading and opening doors to learning, creativity, and opportunity.

As an LRC, we know the power that books have to change lives, and Dolly's legacy is a beautiful reminder that everybody deserves the chance to discover the world through stories.

Thank you, Dolly, for showing the world that literacy is one of the greatest gifts we can give. Your kindness and vision will continue to inspire readers for generations to come. 📖✨

One of the things Great Big Green Week reminds us every year is how much people want to connect with nature, and how much easier that becomes once you know where to look. 🌿

We recommend the excellent free app from our friends at Wildling, mapping over 2,000 nature spaces across the UK, from ancient woodlands to hidden urban green corners, alongside fresh seasonal nature content each week. It has also just launched free, self-led Ranger Missions trails for families to explore together.

Wildling brings fresh nature content every week: what's coming into season and where to spot it, the small signs of the natural world shifting around you, and simple ways to notice more on a walk you thought you already knew inside out.

We wanted to share it as a simple way to keep that Great Big Green Week spirit of noticing and connecting with nature going, all year round. 🍃

Today marks Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day), commemorating Japan's surrender on 15 August 1945 and the end of the Second World War. Thousands of British, Commonwealth and Allied personnel continued to serve and fight in the Far East and Pacific long after VE Day.

Today, we remember their courage, sacrifice and service
