Stirling and District Women's Aid

Stirling and District Women's Aid We are a voluntary organisation which provides support, advice and refuge accommodation to women and children who have experienced domestic abuse.

Domestic abuse is the physical, emotional, sexual or financial violence that takes place within an intimate relationship, such as with a partner, boyfriend or husband. Domestic abuse involves coercive and controlling behaviour, and does not always involve physical violence. Most domestic abuse is perpetrated by men against women and children, but this is not always the case. Stirling and District

Women's Aid is open to women who have experience of domestic abuse within same sex relationships, and to transgender women. Physical abuse could include slapping, punching, strangling, scalding, burning and the use of weapons. Emotional abuse could include being insulted and put down, being threatened, being prevented from seeing your friends of family. It could also involve being made fun of because of your race, sexual orientation or gender identity. Sexual abuse is any sexual behaviour that you do not want and have not consented to. This could include unwanted touching, feeling pressured to take part in sexual acts that you're not comfortable with, being made to view sexual images and rape. Financial abuse could include not allowing you to have access to the money that you need or not allowing you to go out to work to earn money. If you're worried that some of these things are going on in your relationship, then help and support is available from Stirling and District Women's Aid.

πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ This Pride Month, we're raising awareness around domestic abuse in LGBTQ+ communities.

Domestic abuse can affect anyone, regardless of their s*xual orientation or gender identity. Yet LGBTQ+ survivors often face unique barriers to seeking help, including fear of discrimination, not being believed, or having their identity used against them.

Research shows that between 25% and 40% of LGBTQ+ people will experience domestic abuse in their lifetime, with trans and bis*xual people facing disproportionately higher rates.

Abuse is not always physical. It can include emotional manipulation, coercive control, financial abuse, threats to "out" someone, misgendering, deadnaming, or using a person's identity as a tool of control.

This Pride Month, let's create communities where everyone feels safe, respected, and able to seek help without fearπŸ’œ

Following the scenes of disorder and violence in some parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland last night, we want to express our solidarity with the victims and communities affected. Our thoughts are with Stephen Ogilvie and his family. We are also deeply concerned by the racist intimidation and threats towards migrants and communities of colour in Scotland. This is totally unacceptable; risks harm to individuals and damaging the fabric of our communities.

We are particularly alarmed that the rhetoric of β€œprotecting” women and children is being used to justify attacks on minority communities. As a leading feminist organisation, we are clear: this racism does nothing to protect women and puts women of colour at greater risk of harm. It also distracts from the vital work needed to prevent violence against women and girls in Scotland.

We will not stand by while women’s rights are misused to advance divisive, racist agendas.

πŸ’œ It takes immense courage to speak openly about experiences of domestic abuse, and we want to acknowledge the bravery shown in sharing this story.

Stories like this help to challenge some of the common myths and misconceptions surrounding domestic abuse. Too often, people ask, "Why didn't they just leave?" when the reality is that leaving an abusive relationship can be one of the most difficult and dangerous times for a survivor.

By sharing lived experiences, raising awareness, and having open conversations, we can help others better understand the complexities of abuse and reduce the stigma that many survivors face. Social media can be a powerful tool in helping people access information, recognise the signs of abuse, and learn about the support that is available.

If this story resonates with you or someone you know, please remember that support is available.

πŸ’œ Together, we can continue to challenge myths, raise awareness, and create safer communities where survivors are believed, supported, and empowered.

🚩 Know the signs of domestic abuse and coercive control 🚩

Abuse isn't always physical. Coercive control is a pattern of behaviour designed to dominate, isolate and control another person.

⚠️ The signs and examples shown are not an exhaustive list. Domestic abuse and coercive control can take many forms and every person's experience is different.
