Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust

Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust The largest orthopaedic hospital in the UK. An international centre of excellence. This broad range of services is unique within the NHS.

The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust (RNOH) is the largest orthopaedic hospital in the UK, and is regarded as a leader in the field of orthopaedics both in the UK and world-wide. The RNOH provides a comprehensive range of neuro-musculoskeletal health care, ranging from acute spinal injury or complex bone tumour to orthopaedic medicine and specialist rehabilitation for chronic back pai

n sufferers. As a national centre of excellence, the RNOH treats patients from across the country, many of whom have been referred by other hospital consultants for second opinions or for treatment of complex or rare conditions. Patients benefit from a team of highly specialised consultants, many of whom are nationally and internationally recognised for their expertise and experience. Consultants are supported in their work by nurses, therapists and other specialist clinical staff who are trained experts in their particular fields of orthopaedic care. The RNOH plays a major role in teaching, with 20% of all UK orthopaedic surgeons receive training here. Our teaching and clinical effectiveness are enhanced by our work in research and development and academic links with University College, London. Research departments at Stanmore include the Institute of Orthopaedics, the Centre for Disability Research and Innovation, the Institute of Human Performance and the Centre for Biomedical Engineering. The RNOH works closely with other hospitals and trusts, with whom we have joint appointments to ensure maximum availability of specialist skills for patients. Our patients benefit from access to ASPIRE leisure centre which is located on site and hosts first-class facilities for able-bodied and disabled people.

We’re celebrating one year of the SCIC Breakfast Club at RNOH! 🥐

This wonderful initiative, led by RNOH Patient Educators Rebecca and Aileen, helps spinal cord injury patients rebuild independence in a relaxed, friendly setting. Patients get up, get dressed, and prepare their own breakfast—just like they would at home—with expert support nearby.

From overnight oats to eggs, beans and fresh pastries, it’s not just about food—it’s about confidence, skills, and feeling ‘normal’ again. 💛

Patients love it, calling it a “five-star breakfast” and “a great way to get used to the kitchen again.”

A brilliant example of how small ideas can make a big difference in recovery.

We’re proud to celebrate a fantastic set of achievements by Tariq Azamgarhi, our Principal Antimicrobial Pharmacist at RNOH 👏

Ever wondered how a spinal brace is made?

We’ve created a new video that shows the full journey—from scanning the patient and designing the brace, to creating a 3D model and carefully shaping the final product for a perfect fit.

At RNOH we specialise in treating complex bone, joint, and spine conditions, helping patients from across the UK live healthier, more comfortable lives.

This behind-the-scenes look highlights the skill, technology, and care that goes into every brace we make.

Huge congratulations to Amy Bambury 👏

Amy, one of our Learning and Development Practitioners, has achieved a 2:1 in her Business Management Degree Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care with Manchester Metropolitan University—all while working full time at RNOH.

After nine years with the Trust, Amy took the leap to start her apprenticeship in 2024, and her hard work has already helped her progress into a leadership role.

Amy said:
💬 “Taking the step to finally do it was one of the best decisions I’ve made… I hope my journey shows others that you don’t have to feel ‘ready’ to start—you just have to begin.”

We’re incredibly proud of everything Amy has achieved and the positive impact she continues to make for our staff and patients 💙

We are delighted to celebrate an incredible achievement by our colleague Rebecca O’Keeffe 💙

Rebecca, Paediatric Therapy Team Lead at RNOH, has had two important sarcoma research papers published this year. Her work focuses on improving care for children undergoing limb salvage surgery, using innovative non-invasive implant technology.

Starting five years ago, this research has helped address gaps in knowledge and improve understanding of why implant mechanisms can sometimes fail—ultimately helping to improve outcomes for young patients.

Rebecca is now sharing her findings with experts around the world, with presentations at major conferences in the UK and Vienna.
We’re so proud of Rebecca and the whole team for their dedication to advancing care and making a real difference.

👏 Congratulations, Rebecca!

We are delighted to congratulate Anna-Marie Tipping, Veteran Aware Regional Lead for London with the Veterans Covenant Healthcare Alliance (hosted at RNOH), on achieving a 2:1 in their Business Management Professional (Executive) Degree Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care, alongside a Distinction in the Mary Seacole Award.

Since beginning the programme in April 2024, Anna-Marie has successfully balanced their studies with a busy professional role, continuing to support NHS trusts across London in delivering high-quality, Veteran Aware care.

The two-year apprenticeship has strengthened their leadership and management expertise, with a focus on senior leadership, digital innovation and building inclusive teams. Their final assessment – including presentations, a professional portfolio and a project report – was completed to an exceptional standard.

Anna-Marie said:
“The programme provided an opportunity to see the NHS through a different lens… It reinforced the importance of inclusion and being Veteran Aware. I would highly recommend a degree apprenticeship.”

We would also like to recognise the support provided by Manchester Metropolitan University, Hannah Barnett (RNOH Apprenticeship and Early Careers Manager) and Guy Benson (VCHA National Director).

RNOH is proud to be an NHS Veteran Aware Trust, accredited by the Veterans Covenant Healthcare Alliance, and to hold the Ministry of Defence ERS Gold Award. In 2025, we further strengthened our commitment by achieving the Pride in Veterans Standard.

👏 Please join us in congratulating Anna-Marie on this fantastic achievement.

💙 A Huge Thank You to Our Amazing RNOH Volunteers! 💙
On Wednesday 3 June, we celebrated National Volunteers’ Week 2026 with a lovely afternoon tea to say a HUGE thank you to our wonderful volunteers ☕🍰
This year is extra special as we mark:
🎉 11 years of the RNOH Volunteer Service
🚗 10 years of our patient buggy service
👏 And an incredible 200,000 patient journeys supported!
It was fantastic to see so many volunteers come together—sharing stories, enjoying treats, and celebrating their achievements.
With over 200 volunteers, their support touches every corner of RNOH—from helping patients and delivering meals to supporting staff and creating a better experience for everyone.
As our CEO, Prof Paul Fish, said:
💬 “Thank you seems too small—you are truly part of the RNOH team.”
A big thank you also to:
✨ Stacey Evangelides and the Volunteering team
✨ ISS for their support
💙 Volunteers are at the heart of what we do—and their impact cannot be overstated.
Please join us in showing your appreciation for the incredible difference they make every day!
