The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust (RNOH) is the largest orthopaedic hospital in the UK, and is regarded as a leader in the field of orthopaedics both in the UK and world-wide. The RNOH provides a comprehensive range of neuro-musculoskeletal health care, ranging from acute spinal injury or complex bone tumour to orthopaedic medicine and specialist rehabilitation for chronic back pain sufferers. As a national centre of excellence, the RNOH treats patients from across the country, many of whom have been referred by other hospital consultants for second opinions or for treatment of complex or rare conditions. Patients benefit from a team of highly specialised consultants, many of whom are nationally and internationally recognised for their expertise and experience. Consultants are supported in their work by nurses, therapists and other specialist clinical staff who are trained experts in their particular fields of orthopaedic care. The RNOH plays a major role in teaching, with 20% of all UK orthopaedic surgeons receive training here. Our teaching and clinical effectiveness are enhanced by our work in research and development and academic links with University College, London. Research departments at Stanmore include the Institute of Orthopaedics, the Centre for Disability Research and Innovation, the Institute of Human Performance and the Centre for Biomedical Engineering. The RNOH works closely with other hospitals and trusts, with whom we have joint appointments to ensure maximum availability of specialist skills for patients. Our patients benefit from access to ASPIRE leisure centre which is located on site and hosts first-class facilities for able-bodied and disabled people.

This October, Radio Brockley, the hospital radio station serving RNOH, will celebrate an incredible 60 years of broadcasting with three special days of live programmes, music and memories.

As London's longest-running hospital radio station, and the longest-running independent radio station in the capital, Radio Brockley has been entertaining, informing and connecting patients, staff and visitors since first going on air from a disused air-raid shelter on the RNOH site in 1966.

For the anniversary celebrations, presenters and volunteers from across the last six decades will return to the airwaves, including founder member Barry Cobden, who will present a special programme marking the exact moment the station first broadcast 60 years ago.

The celebrations will also welcome back former Radio Brockley presenters who have gone on to successful careers with organisations including the BBC, LBC, Sky News and CNN, alongside a weekend of live music as the award-winning Alpha Sessions marks 18 years on the station.

RNOH has reinforced its position as one of the world's leading specialist orthopaedic centres by becoming the first hospital in Europe to use a pioneering new robotic platform for complex spinal surgery.

The Stealth AXiS™ Surgical System, developed by Medtronic and delivered to RNOH last week, combines surgical planning, navigation and robotics within a single integrated platform, providing surgeons with unprecedented precision during complex spinal and cranial procedures.

Just days after its installation, a specialist spinal surgery team led by Mr Sean Molloy and Mr Jan Herzog, completed the first complex spinal procedure in Europe using the system.

The patient required highly challenging revision surgery after previously implanted spinal instrumentation began to fail, causing pain and significantly affecting mobility.

During the eight-hour operation, surgeons carefully navigated around existing metalwork and critical structures including the spinal cord and major nerves. Using the Stealth AXiS system's advanced real-time navigation and robotic guidance, the team achieved highly accurate placement of new spinal screws within the vertebrae.

Mr Sean Molloy said: "This technology represents a significant step forward in the way we undertake some of the most complex spinal procedures. Revision surgery of this nature can be exceptionally challenging due to existing implants and altered anatomy.

The precision offered by Stealth AXiS enables us to plan meticulously and execute that plan with greater confidence, accuracy and efficiency. Ultimately, the greatest benefit is for our patients, helping us deliver the safest possible surgery while pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved in complex spinal care."

The procedure marks the first use of the platform for complex spinal surgery outside the United States and highlights RNOH's commitment to bringing the latest innovations and technologies to patients.

RNOH has made significant investment in its spinal surgery infrastructure in recent years and, with the addition of Stealth AXiS, now boasts one of the most technologically advanced spinal surgical environments in Europe.

The integrated platform provides surgeons with real-time imaging, planning and navigation capabilities throughout an operation without disrupting surgical workflow. Its scalable design will allow the hospital to expand the use of robotic technology as clinical needs evolve and new applications become available.

Referrals to RNOH's internationally renowned Spinal Deformity Service come from across the UK and around the globe. The service treats children and adults with some of the most complex spinal conditions, including severe deformity, revision surgery and rare disorders.

A remarkable story of courage, resilience and kindness, 10-year-old Saif Mubarak, a patient at RNOH, has been nominated for the BBC Make a Difference Awards' Young Hero category after overcoming extraordinary challenges and dedicating himself to helping others.

After being diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a rare bone cancer, at just five years old, Saif underwent gruelling treatment and an above-knee amputation. During his recovery, he also faced the devastating loss of his father. Despite these hardships, Saif learned to walk and run with a prosthetic leg, embracing life with determination and positivity.

Now in remission, Saif uses his own experiences to inspire and support other children facing serious illness and disability. His nomination recognises not only his incredible personal bravery, but also his commitment to giving hope to others.

Saif's journey is a powerful reminder that even in the face of life's toughest challenges, courage, resilience and compassion can make a lasting difference.

Patients have praised the care they received at RNOH, with the Trust once again being recognised as a better-than-expected performer nationally, further reinforcing our position as the UK's leading orthopaedic hospital.

RNOH has been recognised as one of the best-performing NHS trusts in England after being rated 'better than expected' in the Care Quality Commission's (CQC) 2025 Adult Inpatient Survey. The survey found that the proportion of patients reporting positive experiences of care at RNOH was noticeably higher than the national average.

The national survey gathers feedback from patients about their hospital stay, including whether they were treated with dignity and respect, involved in decisions about their care and kept informed throughout their treatment. More than 58,000 patients took part nationally.

For patients, the results provide further evidence of RNOH's commitment to delivering high-quality, compassionate care and ensuring that people receive the best possible experience alongside world-leading clinical outcomes.

Professor Paul Fish, RNOH Chief Executive, said: "At RNOH, we want every patient to receive not only world-leading treatment, but also the best possible experience while they are with us. These results show that patients value the care, kindness and support they receive from our staff. I'm incredibly proud of our teams, and grateful to the patients who take the time to share their feedback so we can continue to learn and improve."

Congratulations to Queen Adeyanju, Ward Sister and Clinical Research Nurse, who has been invited by the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Sciences (NDORMS), University of Oxford, to join the Steering Group for a national James Lind Alliance (JLA) to identify the top 10 research priorities for hip and knee replacement for osteoarthritis.

The project is led by Dr Philippa Nicolson, Senior Research Fellow, and brings together patients, carers, and healthcare professionals from across the UK to identify the most important unanswered research questions and help shape future research priorities in this field.

The first survey is now open, inviting patients, carers, and healthcare professionals to share their views and experiences. The findings will contribute to the development of a new Top 10 list of research priorities for hip and knee replacement research.

Surgical teams from RNOH, The Royal Marsden NHS, and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, carried out a very complex surgery at The Royal Marsden last week.

Patient Brandon Lee, 26, was diagnosed with a chondrosarcoma in his scapula (shoulder blade) and was referred to RNOH.

Due to the size and location of the tumour, as well as the risk it posed to Brandon’s respiratory system, a team of specialists was assembled to carry out the operation.

Specialists included Professor Craig Gerrand and Mr Sudhir Kannan, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons from RNOH; Professor Vinidh Paleri, Consultant Head and Neck Surgeon, Dr Andrew McLeod, Consultant Anaesthetist, and Mr Aadil Khan, Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon from The Royal Marsden; and Professor Colin Bicknell, Consultant Vascular Surgeon from Imperial College.

Professor Paleri said: “This operation shows the NHS at its very best. Three NHS trusts have come together to provide the very best care for this patient, each bringing their own expertise. A standard major cancer surgery may require, at most, six to seven surgical staff, but this operation required up to 15, so the level of orchestration needed to make this happen was incredible.”

Professor Gerrand, from the RNOH, who led the surgery, said: “Although we manage a lot of patients at RNOH, from time to time we have to phone a friend.

"We came to The Royal Marsden because this particular patient had a tumour that required their expertise, as well as ours.

“One of the things we underestimate in the NHS is the ability to collaborate across hospitals and it has been a great pleasure to work alongside our colleagues.”

Sarcomas are cancers that start in connective tissue, which are the body parts that have a supporting role in the body. The bones, cartilage, muscle and blood are all types of connective tissue.

Chondrosarcoma is a rare cancer that most often forms in the bone, but can also very rarely appear in the soft tissue.

Chondrosarcoma is the most common primary bone cancer, and the most commonly diagnosed in adulthood, It makes up around 30% of all malignant bone cancer cases.
