Michael Portillo visited the Mostar Rock School in Bosnia and Herzegovina during his travel documentary series, Great Continental Railway Journeys. During the episode, Portillo met diverse, young local musicians from the community coming together to play, study, and bridge cultural divides through MUSIC. The school epitomises the Rotary values of
fellowship, integrity, service and leadership.

You can see the program on I Player - Great Railway Journeys Series 8 Episode 5.
Maybe you can't join that school but you can join North Fife Rotary which not only helps community projects here in North Fife but also provides help internationally eg we support a Ravuma student in Tanzania.

Roy Robertson of Drumoig came to our meeting on the 30th of April and gave a thought provoking and timely talk on the Liberation of Vucht on the the 25th of October 1944. If you have a read through it I hope you will gain an understanding of the depth of gratitude that we owe to soldiers who fought for our liberty in WW11.

THE LIBERATION OF VUCHT
Roy outlined the wartime exploits of his father who was instrumental in the liberation of Vught, a small town in the Netherlands, in October 1944. The modern story began when Roy noticed an appeal in The Courier in 2019 from a Dutch journalist wanting information about a Major Robertson and any details of the liberation of his town. In Holland each town celebrates and commemorates its own liberation date. As it happens, Roy’s father had kept a detailed log with maps as his regiment, The Black Watch, moved through Holland. This was all compiled by Roy’s father into a personal book.
Roy & Barbara were guests of honour at the 75th Anniversary commemorations in 2019. Their Dutch granddaughter was a particular hit with the locals!
However, there was a much darker side to the story when Roy revealed that there was a concentration camp nearby. This was really a work camp for able-bodied Jewish people who reprocessed aluminium and other metals from crashed aircraft. Those who were unable to work such as children, the disabled and elderly, were transported to the extermination camps in the east.
Memorial to 1400 Jewish children who were too young to work.
Roy showed photographs of cellars where people sheltered and also prison cells where many had died due to gross overcrowding and arsenic poisoning (from licking moisture off arsenic impregnated paint on the walls).
This was an emotional and sobering talk which made us all realise how much our generation owe to unassuming hero’s – ordinary people who did extraordinary things.
