WDC Scottish Dolphin Centre

WDC Scottish Dolphin Centre Run by the charity Whale and Dolphin Conservation.

The visitor Centre is based at the mouth of the River Spey where dolphins are regularly seen feeding wild and free, along with seals, ospreys, the occasional otter and a whole host of other wildlife. The Scottish Dolphin Centre is the public face of the charity Whale and Dolphin Conservation, whose vision is a world where every whale and dolphin is safe and free. The Centre is based in a 200 year

old former salmon fishing station at the mouth of the river Spey, where it meets the North Sea. On site is a shop, cafe and small interactive exhibition area and tours are given daily in the historic Tugnet icehouse - the largest surviving icehouse in the UK.

Folks, we are busy behind the scenes getting 'summer ready' and part of that process includes getting fab new products into the Centre shop and also the charity's online shop and this season we are delighted to be stocking Dock & Bay's quick drying dog towels 🐕‍🦺😍🦮

These gorgeous towels 'do what they say on the bag' and come in a range of fabulous colours, perfect for a day on the beach with your pooch!

Today is the last day of Volunteers Week and we want to introduce our second summer Residential Volunteer. We are so lucky to have so many amazing Volunteers here at the Scottish Dolphin Centre. Make sure you say hello to them when you visit the Centre! 🤩

Hey, I’m Rebecca from Northern Ireland. Currently I am studying marine biology at the university of Exeter with my time at WDC being part of my professional placement year.
I am deeply passionate about marine life, conservation and inspiring others. Having
grown up on the North Coast of Ireland, interacting with the sea has been a integral part of my life, fostering a deep connection to nature, whether that’s from studying it at university or snorkelling and scuba diving in my free time.
My goal is to have a career in marine conservation, with research and public
engagement working hand in hand to inspire future generations to take action. I want to make a long-lasting impact in marine conservation and I am really excited to contribute to WDC’s mission, particularly through public outreach activities at the centre!

It's Volunteers Week and we have some brand new Residential Volunteers! Say hello to the first of our new Volunteers! 🌟
Hi, I’m Lauren 😊 I visited Moray when I was very small and have loved whales and dolphins since then, but never really thought a career in cetacean conservation would be a possibility! I did a psychology degree because I knew I wanted to help people, was a carer and then found my way to become a ranger. I love engaging people with cetaceans and our seas and involving everyone through surveys and citizen science too. I’m so excited to learn about the Moray Firth and all the amazing wildlife that lives here – as well as meeting all the visitors and people who call the Firth home!

Scotland’s seas have been waiting far too long for real protection.

Many of Scotland’s Marine Protected Areas were designated over a decade ago, yet damaging fishing activities like bottom trawling and dredging are still allowed in many sites. That means vulnerable marine habitats — and the whales, dolphins and porpoises that depend on healthy seas — remain at risk.

We can’t keep asking marine life to wait.

We’re supporting Scottish Environment LINK’s call for the Scottish Government to launch the long-overdue consultation on fisheries management measures for inshore Marine Protected Areas within the first 100 days of the new parliament.

🌅 Start your day with nature at Spey Bay! 🐬📸
Join us for a peaceful early morning photography walk and capture stunning wildlife along the beautiful Moray coast. This relaxed, small-group guided walk is perfect for anyone with an interest in wildlife and photography—whether you’re using a camera or just your phone.

Early morning is one of the best times to experience Spey Bay, with fewer crowds and more opportunities to observe and photograph wildlife in a calm, tranquil setting. We’ll take our time, stopping often to watch, learn, and snap photos along the way.

We had a special visitor to the Icehouse today... This stunning little Humming-bird Hawk-moth. 🤩
It was spotted by the eagle-eyed James Officer who pointed it out to SDC Officer Cath. It was incredibly well camouflaged against the wall of the Icehouse, but when it flew it was very fast!
Humming-bird Hawk-moths flap their wings very fast (just like a real Hummingbird) so they can hover next to flowers, and they then use their long proboscis to drink the nectar.
Have you ever seen one? Let us know in the comments.
