Sean Halsall - Your Party UK Southport Community Independents Cllr for Kew Ward Sefton.

09/04/2026

Today Nigel Farage came to Southport. As leader of Southport Community Independents and outgoing councillor, I feel compelled to speak plainly on behalf of the community I have had the honour of serving.

Southport is a proud town with a diverse community people from all walks of life who have built their lives here, who care about this place, and who deserve honest politics.

Nigel Farage and Reform offer no honest politics. They offer blame. They point ordinary people at other ordinary people at migrants, at minorities, at the most vulnerable among us and call it politics. It is not politics. It is a distraction. It is a con.

The causes of poverty and disempowerment are not found in the faces of desperate people fleeing war and hardship. They are found in decades of policy choices that hollowed out our communities, stripped our public services, and concentrated wealth and power in fewer and fewer hands. That is where our anger belongs. That is where our fight must be directed.

When we place people like Farage and Trump in positions of power, we do not fix our communities. We make the world a more dangerous place for all of us. We have seen where that road leads. We are seeing it now with talk of civilisational destruction.

Southport deserves better than manufactured hatred. Our town is built on community, on looking out for one another. That spirit is still here. I see it every day.

Reject the politics of hatred and division. Embrace community.
Embrace each other.

Leader, Southport Community Independents

I won’t be restanding as a councillor after serving since 2019 — and I want to start by saying thank you.

I didn’t come into politics through the usual route. I came from the bus depot, encouraged by trade unionists who believed that working-class people should be part of making decisions, not just living with them. I’ll always be grateful for that push — it changed my life.

What’s stayed with me most over the past six years isn’t the council chamber or the titles. It’s the people.

The conversations on doorsteps. The messages late at night. The people who trusted me with their problems, their frustrations, and sometimes their hopes. I’ve met people showing incredible strength in really difficult circumstances — and that’s been genuinely inspiring. It’s changed how I see things, and it’s something I’ll carry with me.

If I’ve done anything worthwhile in this role, it’s because of those relationships — working alongside people, not speaking for them, and trying to make sure they were heard.

I’ve been proud to take on issues that matter — speaking up on neurodiversity, challenging the far right, and arguing for working people to have a stronger voice. And during my time working on transport, helping oversee the introduction of new trains and a period without industrial disputes showed me something simple but important: when people are respected and listened to, things work better.

Kew Ward is full of people who care about where they live and about each other. That sense of community is what makes it special. I’m particularly proud that we were able to secure the future of the youth centre through proper investment — because the future of our community depends on the opportunities we give the next generation.

I’m stepping down from the council, but I’m not going anywhere. I’ll still be part of the community and supporting Southport Community Independents, because I believe strongly in what we’re trying to build together.

I started this as a worker, and I leave it as one.

That won’t change.

In solidarity,
Cllr (just about) Sean Halsall

At tonight’s full council meeting I will move the following motion.

I believe our governments job should be to protect societies most vulnerable. Not to balance budgets against arbitrary rules self imposed by the chancellor.

I didn’t get into politics to punish disabled people, we can have a society that takes care of everyone if we just asked those with vast amounts of hoarded wealth to pay a little more.

PROTECTING DISABILITY BENEFITS AND DEFENDING THE RIGHTS OF DISABLED RESIDENTS

Council notes:

• The Government is proposing severe cuts to disability benefits, which will have a detrimental impact on disabled residents in our community. These cuts include:
• Restricting access to Personal Independence Payment (PIP): This would make it harder for disabled people to receive essential financial support to cover the extra disability costs, such as therapies, treatments, and specialist equipment.
• Forcing disabled people into unsuitable work: Moving thousands of people currently too ill to work into the main Universal Credit category, meaning they will lose financial support and face sanctions if they turn down work that could worsen their health.
• Reducing and freezing benefit rates: Freezing PIP rates and cutting the Limited Capability for Work element of Universal Credit effectively reduces the income of disabled residents even if they meet tougher eligibility criteria.

Council believes:

• That these cuts violate the Government's manifesto pledge to fully co-produce disability benefits rules with disabled people and their organisations.
• These changes do not support disabled people into employment but instead remove financial lifelines from some of the most vulnerable members of our community.
• These measures will further entrench poverty, inequality, and social isolation among disabled residents, many of whom are already struggling with the cost-of-living crisis.

Council resolves to:

• Write to the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions expressing this Council's opposition to the proposed cuts and calling for meaningful co-production with disabled people in shaping disability benefits policy.
• Work with local disability organisations to assess and publicly report on the impact these changes will have on disabled residents in our community.
• Call on all local MPs to oppose these cuts and raise concerns in Parliament about their impact on disabled constituents.
• Explore ways to support disabled residents locally, including signposting them to advice, advocacy services, and hardship funds.
• Collaborate with other councils to pass similar motions and form a collective response against these punitive measures.

This Council stands in solidarity with disabled people and calls on the Government to reverse these damaging proposals immediately.

This is shameful. This isn’t representing the people who elected Labour. They have betrayed everything that party was set up to represent.

They have climbed deep into the pockets of the wealthy. Attacking pensioners, parents, the disabled, and last night not even wanting to feed children. We are going to see millions driven into poverty because of political choices made by MPs like our very own Patrick Hurley

Southport’s MP Patrick Hurley has this week voted against providing free school lunches for all primary school children.
31% of children in Southport are living in poverty, with many families struggling to make ends meet and increasing numbers needing to access food banks for help.
The impact that the security of a decent, healthy meal during the school day goes beyond filling the children's bellies, children that are not hungry have better levels of attendance, concentration, can engage and participate better in lessons leading to better outcomes academically.
Parents that cannot meet the cost of school meals and instead provide packed lunches can often struggle to fill their child's lunchbox with what is considered an acceptable lunch and with lunch box inspections taking place in many dinner halls across the country, parents have reported keeping their child off school because they simply don't have the money to purchase the items needed for their child's lunch to be deemed suitable.
Knowing that this is the reality for thousands of children here in Southport it's hard to comprehend how our MP can vote against a measure that would give real tangible help and ease a little of the burden. Instead, his vote shows blatant disregard for the children in Southport and their families and a failure to act in their best interests.
Southport Community Independents will be a voice for the people of Southport, looking out for the community's best interests, putting Southport first.

I sent this email on the 12th March. Still have not received a reply.

Dear Mr. Hurley,

I am writing as a deeply concerned constituent to urge you to oppose the proposed cuts to disability welfare, particularly the planned reductions in PIP. These cuts will not only punish our most vulnerable citizens but will also have the unintended effect of reducing the number of people who can access work.

It is deeply concerning that some MPs continue to claim that Labour is the “party of work,” when in reality it is the party of workers. Your party’s core values demand that we look after those who are unable to work—not penalize them. Cutting PIP will push people into poverty, creating an even more unequal society where the ultra-wealthy continue to control essential resources, while working people are left struggling with stagnating wages and rising living costs.

On a personal note, my own mother, who suffered from MS and relied on PIP, would have been driven into destitution without that support. She was never able to search for work due to her condition and tragically passed away from COVID in 2021. The loss of her support system is a painful reminder that these policies have real, devastating impacts on families. Hundreds of thousands of people will be pushed to the brink with this policy. Decisions made now will impact people for decades to come.

In the spirit of our shared values—and as Nye Bevan once reminded us, “A society is measured by how it treats its weakest members”—I urge you to make every effort to stop these cuts. Instead, I encourage you to consider policies such as raising taxes on corporations and the wealthiest individuals to ensure that our welfare system is sustainable and truly serves those in need.

Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. I look forward to your response and to seeing decisive action taken to protect the rights and dignity of disabled workers.

Yours sincerely,

Cllr Sean Halsall
