Southport Pier - “A national treasure that has been allowed to fall into disrepair” says Rachel Reeves
It’s certainly good news that we’ve had another announcement indicating that the funds to repair Southport Pier will be coming from central government.
Local councillors still don’t have any real detail beyond the press releases and social media videos but the noises from central government are certainly encouraging.
It has been a long journey to get here, which isn’t over yet and it’s a testament to the hard work of campaigners, local residents, local businesses and opposition councillors from across the political spectrum. Sustained public and political pressure has brought this issue to the fore.
Labour run Sefton Council, allowed our Pier to fall into disrepair and it’s good that the Chancellor has acknowledged this with blame lying squarely with Labour councillors based in Bootle.
It was Labour councillors who failed to maintain the Pier which resulted in the closure in 2022 and who consistently voted against measures put forward by opposition councillors on Sefton Council to commence repairs sooner and create a larger maintenance budget.
It’s clear that Sefton Labour can’t be trusted to look after our Pier, even the Labour Chancellor, thinks so.
At next years local elections, when Labour councillors are trumpeting this as a success for them, remember who has run Sefton Council since 2012, who allowed a national treasure to fall into disrepair, as the Chancellor said, and who closed the Pier in the first place.
