A clump of invasive scrub on the Sefton Coast - but this patch of Sea Buckthorn is now special as of today.
Local birder Michael Binns discovered a Nightingale singing from the dense cover this morning - the first time one has been recorded in our area since 1984.
The scrub is located approximately 650m south of the Weld Road car park in Birkdale Local Nature Reserve and can be accessed by heading south down the Velvet Trail.
Part of the Site of Special Scientific Interest, and managed by Green Sefton, the site is sensitive and we ask all visitors to stick to paths, not to enter the scrub or play lures if they are coming to hear the Nightingale.
Natterjack Toads and other rare species are active in the area.
Nightingales are secretive birds and will simply disappear if disturbed.
While the bird is hidden deep in the scrub, a steady stream of admirers have already called in to hear intermittent snatches of its beautiful song.
Thank you for your understanding.
Green Sefton staff will check in on the site during the course of their daily duties to ensure visitors are behaving sensibly.
Enjoy the Nightingale, respect, protect and enjoy the Sefton Coast.

Bin update - the rubbish crew collected and bagged everything on Sunday afternoon and left everywhere tidy - thank you folks πŸ‘πŸ»
Green Sefton didn’t reply but there is now a bin at the entrance to the Reserve - this is now in the middle of what was the car park.
The only access now is via Hastings Road.
We also spotted a β€œpoet tree” as we were out this evening - πŸ’šπŸŒ±

the rubbish bins have been removed from both sides of the entrance behind the golf course. One of the gang has contacted Green Sefton asking for a replacement / alternative. The β€˜rubbish crew’ will be out early tomorrow morning and we’ll try and put something there as a temporary measure.
On a brighter note, the bluebells are in full bloom 🌱πŸͺ»πŸ’š
