Our Green councillors have written to David Burton-Sampson MP demanding answers over Labour’s decision to approve the Jackdaw gas field.

They’re asking three key questions: How does this decision fit with Labour’s promise to stop new oil and gas exploration? Will he challenge the Prime Minister and call for an end to further developments, including Rosebank? And what action will he take to hold the Government to account for its climate commitments?

People who voted Labour on the strength of those promises deserve answers.

We will post his reply once received.

Today we pay tribute to the late Sir David Amess.

Amess served as the Member of Parliament for Southend West for 24 years. On this day, five years ago, he was murdered while meeting his constituents in Belfairs Methodist Church Hall in Leigh-on-Sea. It is in memory of his hard work for the people of Southend that we were granted city status in 2022.

His death was shocking, and a disgusting act of political violence. We condemn such acts in all forms, no one should be targeted for simply representing their communities.

May he rest in peace.

Last weekend, your local South East Essex Green team went down to Brighton for the Green Party 2026 Conference! 🌱

Party Leader Zack Polanski laid out his vision for a fairer, greener society in his speech to the nation, detailing desperately needed measures on renting such as capping at Consumer Price Index or 2% (whichever is lower), calling for nationalising the water industry, and demanding a clean energy revolution independent from fossil fuels.

These measures are not only direly needed for the people of Britain, but the people of Essex as well. Our towns, our rivers, our green spaces, all have been ravaged by pollution and exploitation by private corporations. The Green Party is the only party that will address these challenges head on; across the country, and on your doorstep!

Local Government Reorganisation is on hold. The Greens have been warning about rushing into a top-down reorganisation since January 2025 when proposals were brought forward to Council.

Southend Green Group has reacted with a mixture of relief and frustration to the Government’s decision to review plans for local government reorganisation in Essex, saying its concerns about the process have now been vindicated after almost two years of wasted time and public resources.

Green Party Councillor Cllr Richard Longstaff, who sits on the Planning Committee, has voted against proposals to build 2,000 homes on Southend’s Green Belt.At Thursday’s Planning Committee meeting, eight of the ten councillors decided to reject the planning application.

We're pleased that the Planning Committee voted to reject proposals for 2,000 homes on our Green Belt.

Eight of the ten committee members voted against the application, including our own Cllr Richard Longstaff.

But the fight isn't over. The development will now go to the Secretary of State, there is a separate application for 3,000 homes on the neighbouring site, and we still have the emerging Local Plan process to get through.

We will continue doing everything we can to protect our Green Belt, natural habitats and valuable agricultural land, and push back against unsustainable development at a perilous time for our environment and planet.

This is a win, but the campaign continues. 🌿
