Let's be clear: the Green Group is not part of the administration at Southend City Council. We proudly remain an independent opposition group.

Some of the usual suspects, including a former Tory councillor in this fortnight’s Leigh-on-Sea News, are insinuating that we are in the administration. Here are clear signs we’re not:

🤦🏻 The Press Release from the Council does not mention the Greens
🙋🏼‍♀️ Our four councillors voted differently at the last Full Council meeting
❌ Keir Starmer has said no to local Labour-Green coalitions
👑 No Green councillor holds a Cabinet position
🌾 We have significant policy disagreements with Southend Labour, including plans to build on Bournes Green

Our role is to hold the Lab/Lib/Ind administration to account, challenge decisions when we don't agree, and support policies when they’re right.

Great to have the Eastern Region Green Party Conference with Natalie Bennett, Green Party Member of the House of Lords and Green Party CEO Harriet Lamb in our own City of Southend yesterday.

We had 200 members join us at The Palace Hotel for a day of speeches, discussion and workshops following the party’s strongest ever local election results across the region.

Wow! What a fantastic day to be joined by so many Green Party community campaigners from across the East of England at our regional conference in Southend today.

Local elections 2026, the last elections to Southend-on-Sea City Council. What a mixed bag of results!

Greens take an additional two seats on the city council: finishing the full set of three in Leigh with Cllr , and overturning a 3-decades-long Conservative stronghold, electing Cllr .green in . We now have a group of four excellent and capable Greens representing us through what will be an interesting period of and beyond.

Bittersweet though, that whilst Green vote share across the city soars to record highs, we narrowly missed out in both Belfairs and West Leigh, finishing tight second places. Record results also in Milton, Westborough, and Shoeburyness.

We can’t also overlook the decimation of the local Labour vote, and that Reform now sit as the joint-second largest group on SCC. At time of writing, no clear grouping has yet been arranged for the formation of an administration.

I’m so proud of the team that we’ve built in Southend. It wasn’t that long ago that even Green members thought it was scarcely possible that we could elect Greens here. Now, the Southend Greens are the joint-largest group of Green Councillors in Essex.

This week, we regroup, strategise, and set off as we plan ahead to LE27. We have big plans, and the energy is certainly with us. If you’ve been excited by the growth of the Greens in Southend, don’t just cheer from the sidelines, join our campaign teams and help us get more Greens elected.

💚 City-wide vote share up 25% to 17.3%
💚 Greens finish ahead of Labour, Independents and Lib Dems across the city

Introducing your newest Greens elected to Southend-on-Sea City Council, Anita and Kay. 💚

Anita joins Green Councillors Richard and Stuart, for a now-complete Green team in Leigh ward. Kay is our first Green elected to the Chalkwell ward.

Both Anita and Kay bring decades of experience in how good councils function and how local business is done. Residents in Leigh and Chalkwell rejected the politics of division and blame, and have elected outspoken and committed community champions who will work hard for you.

Our Green team on the City Council has now grown to four, and work has already begun on pressing ahead with the priorities that matter to our community. Follow this page for updates.
