It is hard to believe that five years have passed since we lost Sir David Amess, a dedicated and selfless servant of Southend.

As we remember his kindness and compassion, his family, friends and former colleagues remain in our thoughts.

May his memory continue to shine.

Well… he wasn’t wrong about the “real change” bit.

🔵 Tonight, I was pleased to second an amendment to a Conservative motion establishing a cross-party group to help shape Southend’s Local Plan.

📝 The group will contribute to the Council’s response to Labour Housing Minister Matthew Pennycook’s regrettable recent intervention, and make the case for keeping control of our Local Plan here in Southend.

It will explain how Southend can meet the 31 December deadline for submitting the plan, and why government intervention is unnecessary. Decisions about our city’s future must remain in Southend.

🌳 Conservatives will continue to robustly defend our Green Belt from development whilst working responsibly towards an up-to-date Local Plan. This will then help stop speculative planning applications from coming forward for the Green Belt.

I am delighted that our motion creating this important Local Plan Working Party was unanimously agreed at this evening’s meeting of Full Council, and I hope it will provide a valuable vehicle in holding the Labour Administration to account.

🌳 𝗕𝗢𝗨𝗥𝗡𝗘𝗦 𝗚𝗥𝗘𝗘𝗡 𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗔𝗣𝗣𝗟𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗥𝗘𝗝𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗘𝗗!

Southend City Council’s Planning Committee has this evening rejected a major outline planning application for up to 2,000 homes on land north of Bournes Green Chase.

The final vote was 8 against and 2 in favour.

The two councillors who voted in favour of the development were Cllr Margaret Borton, Chair of the Committee and Cllr Jane Norman. Both are Labour councillors.

Conservative councillors David Garston and Stephen Habermel voted to reject the application, alongside Independent, LibDem, Reform and Green councillors.

This is a huge victory for local residents and for protecting our green belt!

It comes just three days after Monday’s Extraordinary Meeting of Full Council, when a strong cross party majority of councillors reaffirmed the Council’s existing policy of protecting Southend’s green belt.

Both Labour members of the Planning Committee who supported tonight’s application also voted against Monday’s motion to reaffirm the current protection of our green belt.

Residents have made their views loud and clear. The Council has now made its position clear too: our green belt must be protected from mass development.

Fantastic news for Southend and our Green Belt last night. Residents triumphed in the face of Labour's concrete plans 💪🪧🗣️🌳

Councillors from across the Chamber — minus Labour's concreters 🧱 — supported the cross‑party motion to reaffirm the Council’s policy of protecting our precious Green Belt.

The fight must go on, especially with Labour’s draft Local Plan only being paused last week. Southend desperately needs a new, up‑to‑date Local Plan that accurately reflects our city’s LOCAL housing needs and what residents have consistently told us: the Green Belt should be protected, not turned into a concrete sprawl.

🔵 The Southend Conservative Group will continue to stand up for residents and for a Local Plan that delivers homes in the right places, supported by the right infrastructure, while safeguarding the Green Belt that defines and protects our communities.

Strong cross‑party backing last night at Southend-on-Sea City Council for the cross‑party motion to protect the Green Belt. Only Labour (bar one) opposed.

Four administration members - including the Leader, Cllr Daniel Cowan who not only spoke but withdrew his draft Local Plan last week - were present yet didn’t register a vote. Not even an abstention appeared in the screen.

I came into politics to try and make a difference. Sometimes residents will agree with me, sometimes not (often both - that’s what makes it fun!), but they will never accuse of sitting on the fence. I was elected to make decisions, to send clear messages to those in power. Last night’s vote was one of those moments. I’m here to represent residents - not to avoid taking a position.
