Shared Lives Week, which starts on Monday, is a national campaign that celebrates the work of Shared Lives carers and raises awareness of the difference they make in people’s lives.
The theme for this year is: “Shout about Shared Lives – care worth talking about”. Shared Lives carers support adults with disabilities by welcoming them into their homes, either on a short-term, long-term, or day basis. This includes people with learning disabilities, mental health needs, dementia or those who need help to live independently. Shared Lives carers provide family members with a break from their caring responsibilities.
A Shared Lives carer providing day support, for example, can be instrumental in a person developing new hobbies and skills – just by providing a safe environment for them to grow in confidence. This could include accompanying them to a social group, so they can make friends or learn how to make basic meals. Rather than making decisions on someone’s behalf, a carer helps them to choose what they want to do each day.
Carers are paid for their role and receive full training, guidance and ongoing support from the Shared Lives team.
Each caring arrangement is carefully matched, taking into account routines, lifestyles and personalities. This helps create positive, supportive relationships where everyone benefits and allows carers to make a real difference through flexible, rewarding work from home.
