National Oceanography Centre

National Oceanography Centre By gaining a deeper knowledge of the ocean, we help every living thing on our planet flourish. ๐ŸŒŠ

The National Oceanography Centre (NOC) undertakes integrated ocean research and technology development from the coast to the deep ocean. It provides long-term marine science capability including: major facilities; sustained ocean observing, mapping and survey; data management, and scientific advice. The National Oceanography Centre is an independent self-governing organisation - a charitable compa

ny limited by guarantee. The NOC is funded by UK Research and Innovation to work on National Capability programmes, and manages on its behalf, the National Marine Equipment Pool - Europeโ€™s largest fleet of autonomous and robotic vehicles, and two state of the art research ships RRS Discovery and RRS James Cook. The NOC has two sites, Southampton and Liverpool, and employs around 650 staff. We are co-located at both sites with leading UK Universities, giving us a unique position in UK marine research.

James Ketchell Adventure! What an inspiration!

We were so proud to be part of NOC Ambassador Jamesโ€™ homecoming yesterday, after he spent A YEAR sailing around the world!

๐Ÿ†James, already a World Record holder, has now achieved another incredible feat - being the first person ever to have circumnavigated the globe by land (2013 ๐Ÿšด), air (2019๐Ÿš) and now sea (2026 โ›ต๏ธ)!

Stay tuned to find out more about his journey in the coming weeks, including how he contributed to ocean science!

But for now, join us in celebrating this mammoth achievement!

๐Ÿ“ฃ This World Ocean Day we are pleased to share the launch of TheThird World Ocean Assessment, which was contributed to by several of our researchers.

๐Ÿ’™ This landmark publication brings together global expertise to provide the most comprehensive evidenceโ€‘based understanding of how the ocean is changing, and why a healthy and safe ocean matters for society and future generations.

Congratulations to our staff for their work on the chapters! ๐Ÿ‘

Liverpool, you're invited to an ocean party set in 2050! ๐Ÿชฉ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿ”ฎ

Inspired by the research of NOC scientist Dr Marta Payo Payo, 'Fish in a Kettle' is a choose-you-own-adventure style theatre perfomance in celebration of World Ocean Day 2026.

Moving through the interactive performance, you'll encounter different possible futures through fragments of the Oceanโ€™s life. No two journeys are the same.

This strange and playful experience floats between theatre, scientific research, the voices of Merseyside, as well as our darkest imaginings and most hopeful dreams! ๐Ÿ‘€

The performance will be followed by a Q&A with the theatre makers@LabRatsCollective and Dr Marta Payo Payo!
